Dad left me his 300 Savage a few yrs ago .. It has a scope that has crosshairs that are no tin the middle of the scope and it is on a swivel scope mount. I can take the scope and flip it so it is out of the way so I can use the iron sights. Has anyone seen this set up before. He bought it in Utica NY in 1956 for $110 after tax.

Yeah. I bought a 99 DL from 1966 in .308 with the Weaver “pivot mounts” I believe they are called. Fascinating. Leupy fixed 4x on it. Never seen a push-off set up like that before. Done some shooting with it at bench and in field, and guess what? It holds zero. Researched it a bit and had folks offer mixed opinions. I’m leaving it on. Good luck with your own.

They are called Weaver Pivot Rings/Bases and they were discontinued sometime in the 1980's I believe. They fell out of favor with the public when gunwriters back in the day claimed they would never hold zero swinging back and forth like that. Obviously, this was decided over a typewriter and certainly not at the range.

They are a specialized base that only accepts a set of Weaver Pivot rings. A Pivot base part number code uses the regular base number preceded by a 1. For example the regular base for a Remington 760 is #62, the pivot base is #162.

I have them on several of my 760's and on both my Marlin 336's. You can find the bases and rings on Fleabay used often enough.

I also, in addition to the sets I have on my rifles, have about 5 bases for Remington 742/760's, 2 bases for Remington 7400/7600's, 1 base for a Marlin 336 and 5 or 6 sets of pivot rings to go on the bases.

Yeah, you could say I'm a fan.

Old school El Paso Weaver V4.5 on a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington, closed & swung over:

Had one on an early 50s savage 99f. They seemed very tight and were plenty repeatable for the shooting I was doing with that

Thanks guys! I just might keep them then. The scope however has the cross hairs off the center a little. It is blurry and 65 yrs old. I want to shoot a deer with it , just cause dad gave it to me. It is almost new so I might just keep it just for shooting it a little.

I think constantly centered crosshairs came into being in the later 1950s. My Uncle Bill's K4, puchased new in around 1955, didn't have them. Crosshair intersection was a little southwest of center.

Must be the same as mine. The crosshairs are low and to the left. The scope is total junk now though. The gun shot almost a bullzeye at 50 yds 2 yrs ago but last week it was 6" low at 50 yds. The scope is so old that I will just get a new scope. I want to shoot a deer or maybe a bear with it someday, just cause I know dad would be happy.

That mount is a POS and the scope is ancient.

Buy a set or S&K or Conetrol bases/rings and put a Leupold 2-7 on it.

Perfect combination.

Please tell us all about your experience with this mount at the range and in hunting situations and what has led you to believe(because of YOUR experiences with it) that this mount is a POS????

I mean you MUST have a lot of experience with this base to form such a strong negative opinion about it and I find it completely opposite of what I(and a host of others) have found with it(based on real experience) so do tell, I'm all ears
