She been a good one, finally quit on me. No spark.
New plug, looked at wires,

Thinking it could be the CDI. Found a no-name after-market component. Seems cheap enough to try.

Got this machine from the 19th Judicial Task Force, impoundment auction for $220

Have been running it around on 3 farms in 3 different counties since 2012. Put a $35 chink made new carb on it 2 years ago to pep it up.

Can’t be mad it, for going 34 years. Was kind of a game to see just how far it would go.

there are one of those yamaha quads from that time that had a PTO. You see them for sale occasionally around here with a small bush hog attachment.

Slum, they're great machines. My 12 year old runs this '88 YFM225 I think it's called. The floor dry underneath is from a leaky Bobcat. We buy 'em when we can. I'd throw a couple bucks at it to keep 'er on the trail.[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

Its probably the security system disabled the spark.

Put a new battery in your key fob and try again.

I have an 89 200 4 moto at my bear camp. Still runs and looks super. Still with original tires. Wish I could buy them today for anywhere near what I bought that for new.

Yes on the elect start. Starter and battery are good to go. Turns over like a champ.

Ran it up til about 3 weeks ago. Just don’t want to throw a blue spark with the screw driver trick. No even a dull spark. Nothing.

It was never a hard one to fire right on up. It always seem to want to fire up and purr.

I’d start exactly where you’re starting. CDI after 34 years is the logical culprit. Even if the cdi doesn’t get it going, someone will want it for parts. The 250 engine is a gem. Hard to wear one out.

That's a good looking dog. Seems pretty relaxed to just ride on the rack like that.

You got the magneto bits and the pulse generator under the side cover. if you get a wiring diagram and a service manual, often those items can be checked for being suspect with a multimeter ohm reading from an external plug.

The old keihin and whoever japanese carbs are pretty damn good...and Shindy makes carb rebuild kits for all of them.

I don't have a large body of work to speak from, but an '85 ATC250sx three wheeler, a recent '86 fourtrax 250 and a 1999 yamaha bear tracker have kept me on my toes. The 250SX WOULD NOT SPARK even with new cdi, until the local jedi ATV mech figured out the new CDI was bad.

The most recent fourtrax 250 engine looked like it'd been outside under a tree for a couple decades. Cleanish oil, sprayed some kroil or something through the spark plug hole to work on freeing the rings, verified spark, rebuilt the carb, got gas to it and it started on the second kick. They can take a lot of abuse.

Believe me, the idea of a new el cheapo CDI being crapola right out of the box has entered my mind. I have heard of that while reading reviews on this type stuff.

I have had an on-going leaky shut off valve dripping gas while ot sits. Drilling it right into the magneto case. Had wondered of ot had compromised the case seal and contaminated the electronics.

I crossed my bud’s opinion with this thought, he said meh who cares, you still got a hot battery it should fire right up, go with the CDI.

i’ll try that first, then if I have to I’ll get into further testing and going thru in greater detail.

Use to enter a lot of coyote calling contests. We would drop call, drop someone off, drive a mile and drop again. Usually off blacktop because we made better time. The guys that set it up figured out what we were doing and tired of getting their asses spanked they changed the rules.

We used 4 wheelers when they did, it was always 3 man teams. Man, all day long with dead coyotes on that 4 wheeler, 🤢. The smell was terrible, we still whipped their ass. Lol
