Why waste ammunition on something you can kill with a stick or a rope. Cowboy near here, quite a few years ago, smacked a rattler with a rope, and jerked the rope back for another strike. Basically got the rope tangled with the snake, and wound up snake-bit out of the deal. Very sick man, for quite a while, with a lasting scar! Shovel, hoe, pinon branch, are secondary in my book. Snake shot load in a good pistol pretty much ends hostilities. Yes, the heads can getcha for quite a while . I try to bury the heads 1 shovel head deep to "mitigate" snake hazards. I'll dispose of every venomous snake I can - while blessing all the rest for their "Rat Patrol" duties!

Why God made .22 cartridges! My old grandma couldn't afford .22's. She just used a hoe. Yours undoubtedly did the same. LOL. My grandmother would wear out a rattlesnake with a hoe. Seen her kill more than a few when we were kids hoeing cotton.

Kill a venomous snake that is a treat to kids or pets around a farm or house... otherwise just let them be... I fear those i encounter in the boonies, hours from medical care. Id hate to get hit a mile or so from a vehicle. Anyone ever see one at 10,000 ft archery elk or deer hunting a few miles in and then 30 miles from Cortez? I nerver considered it until i sat down by a big pine and had a huge reddish brown horned toad crawl by.

A trusted friend showed his daughter a rattlesnake head, off for 24 hours,-- stuck a stick at it and it chomped on the stick. I knew a 'few' hours but 24 hours was surprising.

Grandson and I were invited to buddy's deer lease in central SC last fall. Sitting in a ground blind, he whispered he heard a snake. I had him repeat it cause you just don't "hear" a snake. The third time he added, "he's right there !!! ". USGI 45acp took care of the rest. Canebrake Timber rattler , 5 1/2 ft, 17 rattles and a button. First rattler I have ever seen in the wild. Charlie
