At the Highpower National Matches last week, Mark DelCotto set a new 600 yard prone record of 200-20X breaking a decades old record (...and beating up on his dad who shot "only" a 199-11x on that same string)!!

I thought that if anyone did that they would keep firing until the shooter dropped an X.

For many years the 1000 yard record on the old 5V target was 100 with 20 Vs plus 7 more Vs. It was set by some PFC in 1927 and lasted at least until the early 1960s, maybe until the 10X targets came in.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

IndyCA35, yes, they could keep firing for X's to establish or extend the record. But the buzz on was that Mark was short on ammo for subsequent matches and chose to end it at the conclusion of his string.

Here's a bit more detail for those that are wondering. John Holliger of White Oak Precision/Armament turned and chambered a PacNor blank for Mark who had only received it about a week prior to taking it to the Nationals.

It's been quite a year for John Holliger producing not only Mark's barrel, but also building the rifle that Carl Bernosky used to win the National Highpower Title. All that and...he's a extremely nice and earnest guy.

Its why he is my smith of choice!!

BTW the conditions must have been decent, I"d have said screw the rest of the matches and kept shooting, of course depending on how his scores were going vs the overall championship.... or had been headed to the row to buy more stuff..... Of course I"ve never done same, can't get past 17X with the service rifle... but I always have fair amount of loaded ammo and enough stuff to stuff 200 more of any yard line just in case.... As I once had to shoot either 4 or 5 strings 300 rapid to get a score..... alibi, pit alibi, challenge, etc.....

Way to go for Mark, its been a few years since I talked to him!

PS I'm back home, but jet lagged or just worn out...

DOn't know about him but my 90 grain JLKs in my service tube will easily shoot that score with room to spare, I just never could seem to be able to break 20 shots with perfect elevation with the post sights. I could even see that they were high or low as it went off, but could not stop myself... of course the 200 is more important than the x count generally so I generally took most shots that felt and looked like they'd be x or really close....

I was thinking Mark shot 223 space gun a long time, for some reason I was thinking 223 AI now... but I have not shot around him or his dad in a couple of years for sure. I know he bought 90 jlks some years back...

Jeff,
The conditions were ugly. In fact the match was shortened because of weather. He shot a TUBB rifle in 6XC. John told me he shipped that barrel to Mark just 2 week prior to the Nationals.

Didn't know he'd got to a T2K.

New barrels have worked well for me too!

Tough conditions I'd have probably made a similar call then.... assuming he didn't think he could string out a bunch more Xs and that he was just shooting well and a bit of luck to tag that 20X. Taking nothing away from Mark.

You recover from the trip yet? I"m thinking Perry next year but also have some things that popped up and they may cancel it out again. Wish our team would solidify and have the numbers and just leave me alone about getting back into shooting at the moment... You know I put 110% into everything, shooting will stress me again.

Thanks for the input.

Jeff
