One of my favorite contemporary quotes I believe it was the Hudson Bay man McKenzie in a Cree lodge describing the goings on. He said something like "watching this Cree woman cook a pot of supper and taking care of her papoose who stumbled around the cooking area naked and shot a stream of excrement from his hind end, to which his mother very carefully picked him up and scraped his bottom clean with her butcher knife, wiped it on her buckskin skirt, and proceeded to stir the contents of her cook pot with same knife!"

I dunno Barry??? Puppy was always served up for the really "special" guests!!
Too bad Mr. Bagwell is not with us anymore. He was one of the best authorities on Bowie knives fightin’ I knew of. Especially when it came to tussles over in "The Redlands". Thosw was mean times!

I pack this knife around a bunch here lately. Made by the same fellow woh made my big knife I posted earlier. Turned walnut handle.
Very cool, but to modern sensibilities, those knives look to us like the sorts of knives a chef might use rather than being dedicated fighting knives.
They are kitchen butcher knives! 😁😁😁 What do you think everyone carried back then? Trade knives were butcher knives. Plain and simple. Look at the Perkins/Shively bowie. This is pretty much the accepted Bowie most likely used by James and Rezin!
Here’s one of Tim Ridge’s interprétations of a French trade (kitchen) knife. It has a good stout blade that will take some abuse. I use it for my Schweinfanger because of it’s 9" length. Perfect in the kitchen, or on the belt! 😉.
I agree with you. In fact I made this very point in response to the first such knife you posted.
I've always liked those. I'll have to look up what a zero bevel edge is.
Took me many hours on the stone to recontour it to a zero bevel, but once you've achieved it, you've got yourself a super sharp blade that's easy to keep that way.
For every day carry & use, the last year or two I've been carrying a CJRB Centros with a very sharp and pointy 3.67" D2 steel blade. Easy opening and solid lock up.
For a "going to a knife fight" type knife, having no experience with it personally, I'd probably take either a Kabar 2217 Big Brother, or one in their Fighting Knife series with the Kraton handle, like the Foliage Green 5011 or maybe the 1292 with D2 steel.

Sorry Hawkeye! I missed that post you made!!! Here’s a pic of a copy of the Perkins knife that was made by the same fellow in Indiana who made my big knife. He made it for my companêro who is the site director at Presidio La Bahia at Goliad. Its a damn nice rendition

Testing the edge will make it duller, as it it measures the force to cut a tiny steel wire.
What you will find is that new razors are sharper than your knives, because their bevel is at a shallower angle.
They also dull fasters.
That is why hand pushed chisels have a shallow angle and mallet pushed chisels have a steeper angle.

Yes, you might not want to use a knife that has a zero degree bevel for chopping or splitting wood. The edge isn't quite as sturdy as a more conventional edge, but if not abused, it's easier to keep razor sharp.

You've also got a very delicate edge that's easily chipped or rolled. Fine for a slicer. Not what I'd want on a big, heavy duty knife.

He died or you gifted them or what?
fck it wrote it off maybe someday he'll send them back to me. I know he has health issues but damn how hard is it to put them in the mail.
