We just had the same thing happen here in Utah about 10 days ago with 2 of them on a wave runner. Sad thing is Utah Lake is shallow enough in most places you can stand up in it.

Rip currents are usually about 80-100ft across, all you have to do is swim sideways across them instead of against them, do that and you get tired and drown, last three drownings have been black teens, a surfer chick did save his brother.

They aren’t great swimmers as a rule. I remember when they weren’t allowed in the community pools.

Can't help but be reminded of Joe Frazier... I always looked forward to this show.

There's a reason you never see black athletes in swimming competitions.

Back when I had a lifeguard badge, one of two that I pulled out was a black girl, whose friends talked into going off the high dive, at FLW, MO.
She panicked before hitting water, and was "flailing".
Lifeguard on duty looking the other way, then showing no motivation - guess he thought she was play-acting.
By the time I drug her out, he was helping get her out of the pool. She spit up some water, then started breathing.
Could have easily gone further south, though.
Seems to me - most black folks are not proficient in the water, for some reason. (Maybe eons of dodging crocs and hippos?)

Was a black guy who used to fish with us on Bobhall pier and he'd tell you straight up black folks sink.

Anyways just hate to see a kid die, no matter the colors of their skin.

Many years ago when i was in search and rescue, we got 7 out at one time. Yougest was about 6 or 7 the oldest was about 30. They each went to try and help the first one down. I drove the dive boat and wound up with all 7 on board, they were all within a 25 ft circle. That was a long day that ya dont forget.
