True, the French military got their collective asses kicked early in WWII, but, research the activities of the underground. Those men, and women, had big brass ones! IMHO, the French have been badly under-estimated for ~ 70 years, now. Their war-like ways pre-date a fellow named Charlemagne, and a lady named Joan of Arc. Texas	French Groupe B reservist (all WWI vets of the 55e RI) stopped Rommel dead in his tracked at Sedan in 1940 for 5 days and he hit em with 4000 Stuka sorties. They had run out of ammo and simply dissolved. Then, Bir Hakiem at the bottom of the Gazala line in Libya the First Free French Brigade once again stopped Rommel dead in his tracks with make shift anti tank guns mounted in the back of 300wgt Chevy trucks! Rommel then hit them with all he had. This prevented the Brits from being surrounded and gave them time enough for a pull out back to Egypt for regroup. About 1/2 of the 1eme Free French brigade made it out in their breakout through minefields. Look into the 4th Moroccan Mountain Division sometime.
