I'm new to this forum and to 99's. I've always wanted one and two days ago I found what I think is a good deal. Serial #1146782. The # in front of the lever appears to an N67. Although that number is really hard to see. Could anybody tell me what year they think this gun was built?

It has the gold trigger, tang safety and pressed checkering. The blue on the barrel has seen a lot of time in a gun rack but other than that it's pretty nice. Chambering is 308 Win. It has an old Redfield 4X and on the rear of the one piece base, a small peep sight is installed. It flips up when the scope is removed. Pretty cool and something I'd never seen before. All that for $175.00 I can't wait for deer season.

Thank you in advance.

No little old ladies. It was in a pawn shop (I hate pawn shops by the way) and they were asking $225.00 My friend told me about it and when I went down to the store there was an old man looking at it. I was gonna leave because I thought it was a gonner. Then he got the manager to knock it down to 175.00!!! THEN he said he didn't want it and walked away! This is not a fairy tale even though it sounds like it.

Yea, I'm pretty excited. I asked my wife if I look like Charles Bronson in "Death Hunt"... all she said was " Charles who???"

Year would be 1962, more information is require to give you a model number. Could be an F or DL. Impressed checkering didn't start until 1965, so the stock set could have been changed. Regardless, great find and great deal!

That rifles about 30 years late for Charle's rifle.. but what a steal!

As a post-1960 rifle it won't have much collector interest, but it'll be a great hunting rifle. The N67 doesn't sound right, the letter should be the last. Maybe 67N? That would make it a 1962 rifle. That doesn't sound right though, because as a 1962 it should have cut checkering. Check the LBC again..

I'm sorry I guess I should have stated it was a 99F. It says that on the receiver. You guys have to bear with me cause I'm new to the 99's. I was reading these threads last night and I had steam coming out of my ears. Another identifying feature (possibly) is that it does have a steel buttplate. I checked it with a magnet.

Thanks again.

@ $225, it was a helluva good deal. Sounds like an ad from Wally-World where they "roll back the prices." I hope you said thank you. oh yeah, by the way, welcome to the bunch.

Calhoun, thanks for the reply. I looked at it with a magnifying glass and that's the best I can come up with. Unless it could possibly be a 29U? It's stamped really poor.

I guess it doesn't matter. Even if it's worth $3,000.00 it's goin' huntin' regardless. I just like to know what years my guns were made.

U or V would make it 66 / 67 and it would have the impressed checkering.

29U would make more sense.. that would put it at 1967.

Edit: As 99trix said above.. I'm typing slow today, he keeps beating me. grin

That must be it then. Thanks again for everybody's help.

One of your Border Patrol predecessors, Col. Charles Askins, used the Model 99 to great effect on the border and also when he was stationed in southeast Asia in the 50s.

You got a great deal, congrats. Thanks...Bill.

I wish we could still carry whatever we wanted. For now it will be the trusty M-4. Just not the same is it?

No it isn't. It seems to me like you guys have a lot of restrictions on you now. I was at Ft. Bliss in El Paso 1968 - 1970 and watched you guys in action and was very impressed. Old Charlie Askins, George Parker, Harlon Carter and Skeeter Skelton were heroes of mine. I respect all you folks for the dangerous jobs you have. Thanks...Bill.
