English and much of the modern world languages are Latin based languages. Thus, having a strong Latin background provides an excellent background for language.

Idiocracy is happening more quickly than predicted.

The only problem with the Classics is they are no longer required in school curriculum nationwide.

That sums it up.

You guys are late to the party. For over a decade we have had Ivy league educated "Constitutional Lawyers" who have admitted publicly that they have never read the constitution, only others opinions on what it says. Higher learning, two lies for the price of one.

Ivy League Schools are overrated anyway.. Look what kind of people Harvard are turning out.. 20% of the student body is white, the rest are every minority known to man, and are given dumbed down standards, so it can be said Harvard isn't racist.. all these Ivy League Schools are running on past reputations, but turning out students with Schitt Degrees, dropped to lower academic standards then your local Community College...

and as pointed out above, most of these people can't even get ebonics straight... like their new term "Woke" for instance...

so back around, who the hell needs Latin or Greek these days... lets get squared away on the basics, before try the fancy dancy stuff back in the mental data bases in minorities' heads...

My daily life is affected by something as simple as a Bible translation. Greek and Latin were languages used when many books of the early church were written. As languages such as English and German changed over the years, their translations changed too. It's important to be able to read the old texts and keep the original meaning as close to the current language as possible even though the words may change.

Everything in my college English curriculum was just a rehash of my high school English courses. Unfortunately, at that time, there was no way to test out of useless college English. I, too, had 3 years of Latin in HS. Do they even teach Latin in schools anymore?

Precision in language regardless of profession or activity matters.... Precision of terms is crucial in both accuracy and efficiency.

If I were sending a kid to school and paying a premium price for excellence, I wouldn't consider Princeton. "Good Enough" ,"Pretty Good", "Alright", and "OK" are not "Excellence".

Similarly, Spanish speakers use Arabic every day and don't realize it. Arabs ruled Spain for centuries. Spanish has sort of a Latin grammar and Arabic vocabulary.

This thread can probably serve as a decent example for insight to what leads to the development of a liberated mind and advanced learning. This is addressed to no one in particular.

Some good folks seem practically based - just get solid basics and whatever additional info/skills I need to do life, make a living, raise my family, etc. Others seem interested in ongoing broadening of mind and abilities toward understanding as much as possible about what is out there. Most of us work somewhere in between - although there seems to be a rising number of not good that fall short of even wanting to know the basics.

Important languages that are based on Latin (Romance) and the huge usefulness and liberating factor in that. (Spanish is solidly in that group, regardless of Arabic invaders).

There are other examples - no need to belabor. We strive and learn according to our values.

Beside knowing that diminishment of standards and quality at Princeton is an indicator of more broad decline in our institutions and culture, there is sadness that an entity once a driving force in excellent education has slipped into mediocrity. One concern is about the harbinger. Whether or not we realize it, many things done at Princeton have affected our lives to some degree.

One of my favorite quotes is "The road to Hell is paved with Ivy league degrees" A dear friend, retired General, retired history prof. once said "Nearly every bad decision made by our government was authored by a politician with an Ivy league degree."
