If they ever do a live-action remake of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer... he is a shoe in for the snowman narrator.

The first one was "Hollywooded" to the point of it being unrecognizable to anyone who read the books. No way I'm going to watch a sequel to an atrocity.
Hanco, DO read the books. You'll see what we're saying. I understand that, but I was referring to a woke version.

Just started reading the books and can't put them down . And there's just no way Dr Maturin can be portrayed in my eyes on the big screen. Hollywierd would use a transgender freak no doubt. I have a former work acquaintance that would fit in mine eyes.

After you finish that series, read Forester; any of them, all of them.
After that, get some H.R. Haggard.

Great movie, but Hollywood will ruin any sequel.

I can’t wait to see it, will see about reading the book series you can pick up used book, usually in great shape from Thrift Books. Most are priced under $5. When I bought mine, I just ordered two or three at a time. They ship fast, and free of charge.

The movie was just a pale shadow of the books. Patrick O'Brian was (IMHO) the finest prose writer in the English language. I read the entire 20-1/2 books of the series every couple of years and always discover new things. I’ve read all but one of that long series. It was well written and the author researched lots of naval voyages and actions from English military diaries and logs. The movie Master and Commander is a bastardized version of O’Brians first book and one later in the series. Master and Commander is about an unorthodox Scottish Officer in the Royal Navy, Lord Cochrane who pulled off some interesting actions and was eventually booted out of the Royal Navy. He wasn’t finished though, he served in Peru and pulled off an incredible victory there. Bernard Cornwall had a story about Cochrane and his mythical Sharpe in Sharpes Devil. C. s. Forster also wrote a similar series about Cochrane in the Horacio Hornblower series. Although the movie was a bastardization of two or three books, it was still fun. Glad I wasn’t a “sailor” on one of those English man of wars.

If you are thinking about buying the unfinished 21st one, don't bother. O'Brian died almost literally in mid-sentence only a few pages into it, and reading that heart-rending stop is deeply painful to a devout reader. Far better to simply close the cover on "Blue at the Mizzen" and be satisfied with your inner thought of "and they lived happily ever after."

I'm a BIG fan of the original movie - I'll be first in line to see the sequel!

People who like the movie have never read the books. And those who have read the books dislike the movie. It's that simple.

The other wonderful Maturin off-the-cuff line is about why the shortened dog watch is called that. "Because it is curtailed," he quipped.
And then there was the time he was asked what the ships's cat should be called and he said, "The only possible name for a ships's cat is Scourge." (That one you'll have to read the books to get...)
