Western rancher had a funtime with me over my fear.... til he spent big bucks & hospital time over a little harmless snake. Ask him if he thought it funny now. Not al all, he said.

Very nasty. Wife of a man I knew was killed by one.
They seem to be aggressive or really curious they come toward you. I kilt two one morning whilst out busting jacks. Not only do you have to look one ground, you have look in the brush they will crawl up into the brush.
Very true. Rattlesnakes will crawl up in the sage brush here in s.w. Idaho and be at about thigh level when you pass by. The Mojave Green is a very dangerous and deadly snake. I've killed two of them in Calif. when I lived there. Nasty aggressive critters.
I have a long time friend who grew up in Arkansas. He was hit by a copperhead and almost lost his leg. Still has a limp from the wound of long ago.
I have a friend here in Boise who lost his Brittany spaniel while chukkar hunting to a rattlesnake. Hit the dog right in the throat. Before he could get back to a vet, the dog died.

I respect their ability to do serous harm. That's why I used to catch them. It's better that I put myself at risk, so that others may see them in a safe, controlled environment. Most people don't know what they look like. Around here, the common imature black rat snakes are killed by those who call them copper heads. What they do is eliminate the prime predator of venomous snakes. They kill what keeps the numbers of rattlesnakes and Copperheads in check, guaranteeing them to flourish.
Around here people kill Arizona Kingsnakes, an extraordinarily useful and amiable snakes that kill rattlers for food. The snakes have rings so, of course, "they must be rattlesnakes". People could use some education about animals.

I've used everything from videos to Carnegie museum taxidermy to educate this little part of my world. I've found that the live examples are much easier to stick in minds, identify and distinguish From the harmless varieties. People act on their fears. The only thing that drives that from them in my experience is education and safely exposing them to the critters that frighten them. It sounds like you are doing what you can too. You took the time and effort to learn an important fact that most don't care to know . 👍
Those Kings certainly live up to their name among reptiles. The best nature shows featured a big king snake wrapping, then swallowing a rattler head first. Your CA banded are definitely the prettiest kings.
copperheads are normally pretty docile and usually dont cause major injury if bitten unless you have an allergic reaction. buzz worms and mocs will mess you up almost every time.
Almost always it is simply dumb to kill a king or gopher/bull snake, and especially if you have troublesome mice/rats/other rodents around your place. Sometime, ignorant folks are their own worst enemy.

i shot one in the neck one time, it didn't appreciate started making funny sounds as it wiggled its way to m. course three rounds of no4 shot changed his opinion.
