Looking for somebody who's desire to own a good 338-06 Ackley is stronger than my resolve to keep it....... grin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOR SALE:

My custom 338-06 Ackley built on a stainless Remington 700 long action, with the good "S" prefix series finish.

Action was lightly tuned, with the face squared off, lugs were lapped, and recoil lug surface ground flat on both sides.

Threads remain factory dimensions.

Bolt was spiral fluted by Kampfeld.

Barrel is a Rock Creek #3 contour, 21 1/2" long, with a .650" muzzle diameter.

McMillan Classic stock, regular fill, 50/50 black & orange mix, s/s sling studs front & rear, left side flush cups front & rear.

Factory aluminum pillars installed, 13 1/2" length of pull, and 1" Decelerator pad.

Remington factory silver BDL bottom metal.

Trigger is an old school stainless Remington.

Stock has not been bedded, and weighs right at 30 ounces.

The bare gun weighs 6 pounds, 12 ounces w/o scope or mounts.

The Leupold or Talleys in the pictures are not included.

I have 97 pieces of Lapua brass, and 100 pieces of Remington brass, all fireformed, included in the sale.

Also included is a Redding Deluxe 3 die set, which consists of full length, neck, and seater dies.

$2195.00 shipped in the lower 48 to your FFL, who must accept from a private individual, no exceptions.

No trades, don't ask.

Payment by bank check, postal money order, or personal check with the appropriate wait.

The barreled action only, preferably w/o the trigger, will be sent to your FFL, the rest of the parts directly to the buyer.

Thanks......

Up till a couple months ago, I hadn't shot this for six years.

I had pulled it out of the safe for a looksie, and found one Talley cap had split just sitting in the safe.

I ended up doing a scope switcheroo, along with different rings & bases.

So I shot a few rounds to sight in the new setup, with the last three going into an inch at 200.

That barreled action weight seems high - any chance that is actually with the stock?

So love this build. Have a NULA in same chambering inbound sometime in the next 4-8 weeks or I’d be all over this. May I ask what kind of velocities you are seeing and with what bullet you’ve found best accuracy?

Cheers and good luck with your sale. Hoping I can continue to resist.

I concentrated on the 200 grain Ballistic Tips for general use, and 210 partitions for "serious" use.

Either bullet at 2800 fueled by H-4350 and Federal 210's.

I've only ever hunted it one time, an easy walk from the truck over looking a hay field.

The big doe never knew what hit 'er, & crumpled on the spot, complements of the 200 BT.

I've been saving this gun for maybe an inland griz hunt, and/or one last gasp for elk.

More than likely, the griz is a pipe dream, and I have a couple other things suitable for elk, so this is now expendable......

Short history on the build......

I originally picked up a painted Edge Classic for a fair price, just because, with no build in sight. However, about that time, I was reconfiguring my arsenal, and fazing out my "bigger" guns. So, I had just built a 7-08, and sold my Ti 30-06, so I wanted another 338 of some sort.

I already had had a S/S KS in 338 WM (twice), and a S/S 338 Ultra, which was too much of a good thing. When talking to the smith one day, he mentioned he had a 338-06 Ackley reamer, so a star was born.

I picked up the blank and laid it in the channel where the shank best lined up with the inlet in the stock, which was all of it, and cut/crowned at 24". All the fireforming was done with 700X and butt wipe. Found loads for the BT's and PT's, then made the Remington brass for plinking loads with 180 BT's.

Every time I looked at that gun, I despised that long shank. So I finally made the executive decision one day to revamp it. I ordered the new black/orange Classic, then sent the barrel back for a fix. He cut 2" off the shank, and a half inch off the muzzle, which made it the current 21 1/2" long. Once the stock showed up, load work was short & sweet, the same loads were the best again, with hardly any loss of speed.

FYI....current cost of the Redding Deluxe 3-Die Set is going to shoot the hell out of a $200 dollar bill, Midway's price is $198.99 plus tax, a couple others list them at 175-178 plus tax & shipping. Of course all out of stock and a long wait time.

Lapua brass is out of stock as well, and will run you 125-150. Adding in the 100 pieces of Remington brass will put you over two bills worth of brass, and all formed.

Current new price on the McMillan will be close to $750 for replacement value.

Rock Creek is not currently taking any orders.

Minus my shipping costs, the base gun price is in the low 17's........
