I am looking for images of the >Texas sized island of trash in the Pacific. I have found images of trash as well as computer animated/generated mockups, but I am looking for the actual satellite images of the massive trash island.

I recall seeing them, but they seem to have been scrubbed from the interwebs, as I am unable to find them

Thanks in advance.

Apparently the trash density is not great enough to be seen from space, in spite of the total mass caught in the gyre.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the world's largest collection of floating trash—and the most famous. It lies between Hawaii and California and is often described as “larger than Texas,” even though it contains not a square foot of surface on which to stand. It cannot be seen from space, as is often claimed.

Lots of pics, just not from space.

from the article,

Who is responsible for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

“The United States contributes as much as 242 million pounds of plastic trash to the ocean every year, according to that study. China has begun to take steps to stem the tide of trash floating from its shores.”

Yea, I’m not buying that story!

I can find lots of images of "small" trash islands.... but so far, nothing really of the giant trash island the size of France....... Certainly nothing that indicates that it's the size of France.... or even Luxembourg.

As far as not being able to see it from space.... bullschidt. Everything now can be seen from space.

IIRC Plastic breaks down pretty quick into smaller bits, most of the trash gyres consisting of little bits. Worse in some ways because they get eaten.

Unlike most of you I have actually seen it when some of the ships I served on in the USN were down there. It isn't really an island but more of an area where several ocean currents come together and the trash from India and China (other nations as well but those are the 2 biggest offenders) ends up. Because we're talking about ocean currents the stuff drifts together and then drifts apart and is constantly moving around that area. Sometimes it seems really thick and other times it is spread out. But it is undeniable that it exists and that there is a lot of trash in the ocean in that area.

There have been some outfits using surface skimmers to collect the trash and bringing it ashore for sorting and recycling. If that continues and I hope it does then maybe in the future they can get a handle on it but that won't happen until the other nations grow a couple of pairs of balls and tell China and India to clean up their act. As long as they get a pass they will dump their trash in the ocean.

How does it get from India to there? does it go south around Australia then up and across the Pacific past New Zealand? or does it go south west and around the bottom of Africa then across the Atlantic and around the bottom of South America then up the west coast? or does it use the Panama canal?

It's amazing what's now been scrubbed from our collective memory, which is what the internet had become prior to recent times. The crime of the scrubbers is on par with the burning of the library of Alexandria.

Take a trip to SE Asia or Africa, you chit when you see the plastics in the rivers. I haven’t seen the ocean mass, but I believe it’s there.

Blame it on China. It is their devious way to build new islands and therefore to gain more territory for military bases.

It is probably all of SE Asia with China the largest contributor.

Plastics have a long shelf life, even in the ocean. It's an issue, 20 years is the minimum time to break down under perfect circumstance. Some plastics will last 200+ years. I think plastics our a very real problem we should be tackling instead of the big lie of human caused large climate change.
