The mexicans and the mennonites wear straw hats out in the tobacco fields around here.

A wide brim might be a problem with your backpack. If your carrying a taller bag or frame pack.

I worked on a dirt job down in the Mojave just above the Mex border. Brutal heat, best thing I found was one of those pith helmets like the British wore in Africa. Noticeably cooler than straw or white plastic hardhat. Got ribbed about it, but before the job was over, several of them were seen.

I use a khaki boonie hat when i am going to be out for a long time.

The skin doc said because it did not have any holes or spaces for the sun to get thru it would be better than a straw hat.

My bald spot likes it too. grin

Barmah 1057 Canvas Drover is what I wear. It's also collapsible for storage.
It has sun protection in the front and is the coolest temp wise I've found.

I like my ultralight boonie. It's made of some very thin polyester like coolmax. I don't normally like polyester, but this kind is so thin that it actually breaths. I like the camo too.
It's brand is Enduracool. The company says to wet it and the.evaporation will cool it. I never noticed that, but the only cooler hat is a visor with open top and a breeze.

PS:. I added velcro tabs to the sides so its more stylish going into the stores, or when ears don't need covered.
You could do the same with any boonie using snaps, buttons or a cord if you want.

Not sure why you'd remove cowboy hats from contention. My vote goes to the Resistol Straw with leather sweatband. I'm not sold on the Dri-Lex sweatband just yet.
