A Washington state man is accused of firing two rounds into a person attempting to steal his truck’s catalytic converter and then dragging the victim, who was still alive, and leaving him in a nearby field to die.

SEATTLE OFF-DUTY COP DIES AFTER GETTING STRUCK BY CAR, THEN CAR'S STOLEN

King 5, citing court documents, reported that the incident occurred at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday. Michael Scott Campbell, 54, told Lakewood police that he was sleeping and roused by someone trying to steal the car part.

Campbell, who has been charged with second-degree murder and kidnapping, allegedly told police that he noticed two legs sticking out from under the truck and fired two shots "straight down."

The would-be thief attempted to get back to his own car but could not make it and collapsed. Campbell allegedly told police that the individual was still talking when he tied his hands to the ball hitch of the F-150.

The report said the shooting occurred in a parking lot of a business. One witness told police that he saw the truck dragging some kind of object. Officers said the victim was dragged about 400 feet.

The would-be thief was still alive when dropped off in the field, charging documents said, according to Q13Fox.com.

The problem is that they are charging the man with 2nd degree murder and kidnapping. They ought to be giving him a medal and buying him more bullets.

As for the thief, he got what he deserved.

Hopefully the charges will be reduced to littering.

No sympathy for thieves. It's a shame that the truck owner will have to suffer because of what he did. The fact that the "victim" was in the process of larceny should, at the very least, be a mitigating factor at sentencing, but it won't be. Juries almost never have any say in that, apart from potential death penalty cases where they can sometimes decide between life in prison vs the death penalty.

Normally one would gather as much info as possible (in this case car make, model, plate numbers) and call the police. Catalytic converters are expensive, but couple broken legs should be punishment enough. Now the fella will have to dish out a whole lot more money than cost of new catalytic converter. I mean, dragging severely wounded guy and later leaving him to die looks extremely awful, truly hideous and awful act.

Simple solution. Steel pipe to the feet and knees in such a manner as to preclude the thief ever walking again(don’t forget the mask), go back to bed. Cops show up, me know nothing...

Juries can find not guilty anyone they want. Judges and prosecutors will lie to the contrary. If the law is unjust do not indict. Do not convict.

I've been aware of Jury Nullification since the 1980s. That's a different question from whether juries can decide penalties. Yes, if they believe that a penalty would be unjust as applied to a particular defendant, they are empowered to disregard the law and find them not guilty of the charge (a fact, as you say, which is usually hidden from juries by judges). That would be the only way they could impact penalty in most cases.
