Years ago when Knob Creek rifle range in Ky. held its 1st. of many annual machine gun shoots. I was helping a gent that had a Quad 50 antiaircraft on a WWII half track. Had the opportunity to shoot various weapons and the Lewis was nothing but a grin. But 4 M2's firing together was the party gal. He would take it out ever so often and cut trees down at 400 yds. for the range. Another fun one was a full auto Uzi in 22 LR. Like a swarm of hornets in hand.
Oh no. Savage started out making Lewis guns for the Brits, and all of those were in 303 British. Canadians bought a bunch as well. The US 30-06 were a modification of the machinegun after it'd been in production for a while.

I always thought the British SE5A was pretty cool looking with a Lewis strapped to the top wing

It is a controlled round feed. It will fire sideways, or even upside down.

I'm going to have to watch Passage to Marseille if it has Peter Lorre firing a Lewis machinegun... at 1:19.

You ever notice how much the weapons portrayed in the first Star Wars movie looked at lot like broom handle Mausers and Lewis machine guns?

At about 15 seconds into this you will see a Lewis in a rear turret in action. The way a Lewis worked would not allow it to be reliably synchronized to fire through the propellers which is why you see them mounted above the prop when used for forward fire, but the way they fed from the drum magazine made them preferable for turret use over belt fed machine guns. BSA made a lot of Lewis's - lewis-model-1914
