A week or so ago someone posted a video on how to avoid getting the rash.
I’m one of the lucky few who seem to be immune, as I have often been exposed but never broke out.
Anyway, I’ve got an old pine tree on the edge of the yard that’s dead and needs to come down.
Damn thing’s got Ivy all through it. I cut the roots off at the ground and at eye level, doused them w/ lighter fluid and burned them off.
What I’m worried about is how long after it’s dead, is the poison active?
I don’t want to get it on my clothes for Wifey to get it that way.
Any ideas on how to handle this?
I was figuring on waiting until September or October to drop the tree.

The oils are still on the plant. I would wait as long as you can.

Be very careful of the smoke. People have died from getting poison ivy smoke in their lungs.

Get some poison ivy killer, contains triclopyr, and spray the re-sprouts to kill the roots. Cut the tree down and be careful of how you handle the downed tree.

I've read up to 5 yrs for all the oil to get out off dead vine, not sure how true. Last time I got it I had to take prednisone, been careful since. Whatever you do don't take a piss & handle your member after fooling with that tree. Nothing worse than getting it on your pecker.

The oils can be there for months, some claim years.

As posted, be very careful of the smoke.
Best deal for your clothes would be to wash them yourself.
Just them, nothing else. Don't let them touch anything.
Think of it as dirty engine oil, and you don't want to get it on anything.

You aren't immune.
You just aren't sensitive to it.
However, every contact is a new one. And one can suddenly
be sensitized.

Supposedly, no one is born sensitized.
You get exposed, some develop a sensitivity after the first exposure.
Others take more. Some never do.

Had it from head to toe. Hadn't put out leaves & I figured it was dormant. No need in telling a long story. Learned my lesson.

Be worth it to me to hire someone to come in, cut it down and haul it off, if it is in some place where it can't be left on the ground to rot. I sure wouldn't try to burn it even if it was old and dry.

Just keep in mind you're immune until your not........

The oils will last for at least a couple of years in a dead vine. If I was in your shoes I'd wear clothes you didn't care about and put them in a garbage bag when you're done, no sense in taking a chance on getting it on the inside of the washer to spread to something else.

Nope, do not burn poison ivy vine under any circumstances.

The vine can be completely dead and still give you a case of poison ivy .

Oh yeah, taking a leak with the oil on your gloves isn't a good idea. Happened to me a few years ago. Woke up scratching, and knew immediately what happened. That caladryl (the clear, not pink) on cotton balls sure felt good.......

Many people are immune to PI but that immunity can disappear overnight. It's one of those strange things. You might get into the stuff over and over with no affect, but then one day it will nail you. You will then be susceptible from then on. Count yourself lucky but you have an unknown number of exposures to burn so avoid it to keep from using them up.
