COLUMBUS (WCMH) – Columbus community leaders are calling for a ceasefire in honor of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday.

At a press conference outside a barbershop Sunday, city leaders pleaded with people to make a change and encourage one another to end the violence.

As of Sunday, the city has 89 homicides for 2021.

“We have exceeded the homicide rate of where we were last year, and that is unacceptable,” said Charity Martin-King, president-elect of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

This is why leaders are calling for a 24-hour ceasefire on Saturday, June 19, the Juneteenth holiday which celebrates the emancipation of slaves in America.

The press conference featured dozens of local activists, including pastors, educators, and business owners like Al Edmondson.

Edmondson has been running the A Cut Above The Rest barbershop in Columbus for more than 30 years, and says the violence has gotten out of hand.

“We have to do something,” he said. “We have to send a message, not only to the city of Columbus, but send it to the nation, because all of this is going around as people are coming out of COVID.”

Edmondson held this press conference at his barbershop in Bronzeville, calling upon city officials, educators, and faith leaders, to encourage everyone to end the violence for the holiday.

“We’re telling everybody in honor of Juneteenth, let’s tone it down for 24 hours and see what we can do, and if we can get that done, we can do more,” he said.

“We’re really go to adjust and deal with the issues that are facing our community in a way that is aggressive, grassroots, hands-on, and building synergy and mutual concern” Martin-King said.

Martin-King said the announcement was about more than just bringing awareness, but also creating change. While the hope is to have a 24-hour period of peace, the goal is to make it a permanent one.

“No matter what happens on the day, it’s the mentality and the perspective of people coming together around the ceasefire initiative as a whole,” Martin-King said. “It’s not a one-day thing. We’re in this for the long haul.”

Woke culture has made a cause of elevating blumfs in the public eye. The reality is that the more they are exposed the reality of their nature will become apparent and more normal people will learn to respond to their acts more realistically.

A sense of personal security is pretty high in the hierarchy of needs. The surge in gun sales in recent times is an indicator that a tipping point may be approaching sooner than the libs and their lackeys realize.

So I'm confused. If one of those folks wants to kill somebody, do they got to wait 'til Juneteenth be done or do they just use a rock or a knife instead of a gun. The TeeVee just kept talkin' about "gun violence" and it's a "cease fire" so are other methods acceptable?

I'd venture more are shot on weekends and holidays than on days we go to work. Maybe we should ban all holidays.

Anyone familiar with Columbus, the easton shopping complex, the blacks have taken it over and regularly shoot it and themselves up. Other night she was working and medics wheeling a few that were shot up from easton. Cops that showed up to the ED said easton management pays the news to not publish the shootings to keep the taxpaying, job holding whites showing up to spend money.

I was a police officer there for 2 weeks short of 33 years. The Democrat leftist mayor is the worst thing that ever happened to Columbus. He is destroying a fine police department and making Columbus the murder capital. So glad I'm retired.

A man was killed in a shooting late Saturday night at a Certified Oil gas station on the West Side of Columbus, according to police.

The shooting was reported at 11:18 p.m. at the gas station located on Frank Road near both an exit and an on-ramp for Interstate 71. Columbus police responded and found 20-year-old Victor Castorrena with gunshot wounds.

The officers rendered first aid until medics with the Columbus Division of Fire arrived and transported Castorrena to Ohio Health Grant Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Castorrena died at the hospital at 11:47 p.m.

Columbus police have not publicly identified a suspect and continue to investigate the fatal shooting.

The shooting occurred toward the end of a 24-hour ceasefire that Black community leaders had called for last week in order to peacefully celebrate Juneteenth, a day meant to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

Toronto had a shooting at 1 year-old’s birthday party that saw 3 kids, ages 11, 5 and 1 and 1 adult shot. One kids has life-threatening injuries, another serious.

No reports on the ethnicity of the shooter or victims. Which, in itself, speaks volumes.
