Does anyone know where to find reasonably priced grip panels for a Freedom Arms Model 83 .454? I have a field grade and don't like the Pachmayr grips that came one it. Freedom Arms price for "impregnated hardwood" is $203. That just seems like a bit much.

adrainrog: I've been down that road before and, IMO&E, I would strongly suggest sending it back to FA. Their fit and finish on grips cannot be matched for less money. While the hardwood is nice, I've found the Micarta to have a better recoil characteristic. Your tag line says it all.

I agree with Handloader. Sometime back the rep told me that if the grips didn't fit absolutely perfectly they would end up cracking under the recoil. I'd go with the Micarta as well.

My experience, which mirrors the previous posters, is to go with FA. The hand fitting is worth it, especially on a SA of FA quality. I like micarta much better than the impregnated wood.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Three people saying the same thing can't possibly be wrong.

WHile $203 is alot, consider that most custom grip makers begin at $100 for grips that are only rough fitted (grips not sanded or polished to the frame). The fit on FA grips is absolutely awesome, as they polish the grips along with the grip frame. Custom makers who do the same, like Dustin Linebaugh, charge $250.

I shud be getting mine in 2~3 weeks w/the pach grips too. Didn't like the feel and am hoping hogue will come out of one for the 83. The later SRH comes std w/the hogues as does the Smith XVR and I like them.
