Worked in that industry, salt mining. It was discussed often.

Wow! I would’ve been a sophomore in school at that time, but I never heard anything about this until now. I bet that was something to see.
Very good post.

I lived in Des Allemands , La. just a skip&hop from the lake although I was at work east of there offshore venice , louisana when it happened . I got there in mid-january 1980 it happened in Nov. . I bet I've been on that lake - had a small fishing boat w/a new 16hp suzuki outboard - i took it everywhere , took a girl on a date on that boat .
People talked about salt-mine for many years in that region .

Rig I was on South Pass 49 straight out of the mouth of the Mississippi River , one side of the rig was 150' deep other side 400' + deep , platform sat on the side of the mississippi river canyon . Platform was drilled - then casing ran - cemented/concrete into/onto the steep underwater wall .
Previous platform in that location turned over and fell into the canyon - live & learn - second is still there .
Sometimes the rig/platform would do a big wiggle - from an underwater mudslide hitting the pilings . People would ask ''is there a boat here'' meaning a large supply boat bumping against the rig . Nope .
over .

Every so often we visit the site of the South Fork Damn. That’s the one that held back Lake Conemaugh and the thousands of tons of water that leveled Johnstown PA in 1889.
Each time I do I think about how it would have been to stand there on that hill and watch as the damn failed and the lake drained. The death and destruction was all miles down stream, but it must have been surreal to watch that lake disappear like it did.
I bet this was the same.

They say the guy out on the lake in a fishing boat that day had eyes like barber poles for a month afterward. Thought he was in a giant commode.

Yeah, familiar with the story. A mining machine mfr. I once worked for lost a good account that day.

It's never a good thing when a whole bunch of water goes where it's not supposed to go because of an error. Makes me think of Rexburg, Idaho and the Teton Dam disaster.

I nearly took a job up near Wolf Point, Montana back in the early 90s. The quarters I would have occupied were right on the Missouri River downstream from Fort Peck Dam---I mean like 25 feet away. Creeped me out knowing all that water could be upon me in a matter of 10 minutes. I passed on the job.

Don't be the darkness.

America will perish while those who should be standing guard are satisfying their lusts.
