I know this topic has been beaten beyond recognition (I've searched the old threads already), so I'm hoping my questions create enough new twist to keep from boring everyone.

I'm an archery newby so the broadhead thing leaves me with newby worries. I'm shooting a 60# Drenalin with 29.5" draw and 328gr carbons. I haven't shot over a chrony yet, but think I'm around 300fps if I did the math correctly. I'll be hunting Elk and Mulies, with large bull elk (I can hope) being my biggest concern. The broadheads I'm considering are the Slick Trick, G5, Snuffer SS, and Muzzy MX3. My two concerns are penetration with my lighter draw and arrow weights, and the ability to find a fast tune. I've read that the Slick Tricks typically shoot to the same POI as fieldpoints, and are built tough. If I'll have equal penetration to the other three heads then my decision is made. BUT, I've also read that the "cut on contact" style heads (G5 and Snuffer) penentrate better, and/or the three blade design which would include the MX3. I know that all four heads are tough enough and three of them are covered with good warranties. My concerns are penetration and hassle free tuning.

I'm practicing a lot, but need to get crackin' on ordering my broadheads. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Edited to add; if the Slick Trick will work, can I get away with the "magnum" version with it's additional 1/8" cutting diameter?

Any of the above will work,I'd opt for a heavier arrow set up for elk.JMO

I may go heavier down the road, but right now I've got a dozen new arrows that I need to work on wearing out.

I'm aware of the K.E. debate, and am hoping to get away with the light and fast setup. BUT, it's also why I'm concerned about broadhead selection and penetration.

I am shooting the 100gr Shuttle t-locks which fly great, but no shots on game yet. The local shop found they pentrated the best into a new foam target, a little better than the slick tricks and montecs.

As an aside, a friend's wife had a double lung pass-through on her bull two years ago with 85gr Thunderheads from her 26" bow set at 46#

Well, for better or worse I placed an order since it's my day off and I'm running low on time.

I ordered directly with Slick Trick for a half dozen 100gr standard 1" heads and an extra pack of blades------$64 shipped. Should be here in two or three days.

Hopefully I can report how they perform on game this year.

Thanks for the reasurance Redrabbit. The fact that women have good success with lighter bows is the reason I ordered a 60# bow to save my shoulder. I just remind myself that like rifle hunting, shot placement is king.

I just whacked a caribou with a 60# Mission bow and 100gr Slick Tricks. My arrows were at 418gr total weight and moving at 260fps. This is not spectacular performance, I realize, but the combo proved lethal with an accurate shot.

Before buying the broadheads, I shot several "sample" broadheads at the local archery shop. The 1-1/8" diameter Slick Trips shot exactly where my field points did, so it was an easy choice for me. I was really impressed with their penetration and performance on the caribou.

You chose wisely. The 100g slick trick is the only broadhead I have used which I like better than the Muzzy 100g. It hits the same as my field points. See http://www.broadheadtests.com for more info. The 100g Slick Trick scored the highest score ever. This spring I had pass throughs on a Red Stag, Elk, and Tahr while hunting in New Zealand. I'm shooting 7g per pound on my setup.

Thanks for the feedback. Depending on how well my light arrows perform I may go heavier after I loose a few of these. The flat trajectory and close pin locations is confidence inspiring right now. I realize that an LRF would moot that point however.

Thanks for the link. I guess I have to sign up for a membership to read the reviews. Trying to read in half-second intervals before the page was blocked got a little frustrating.

I shoot 6 grs per pound with 100 grain muzzy and have never lacked in performance for me.

I used to shoot Muzzy until I tried Slick Tricks for the 1st time. The blades are WAY more durable and they fly like target tips. The buck I shot at 23 yards was an easy pass through. He ran ~ 10 yards, stopped to check what happened, and did the bobble-dance....

I have harvested quite a few animals with Muzzy 100g. It is a great head with a proven track record. I switched to Slick Tricks because they are made of steel and hit exactly with my field points. The ferrule and blades are significantly stronger. I tested both side by side in Mexico shooting numerous (>50) javelina and feral hogs. The Muzzys were prone to damage(bending)of the ferrule and blades. The Slick Tricks just kept going and going. I was unimpressed with various expandables. Some people like them though. To each his own.

You probably dont even need the extra blades, the slick tricks come apart easily and i sharpen them on my diamond hone. You can punch a rib in and a rib out, they will still look sharp enough to hunt with. Once you hit em up again they are just like new, best things since sliced bread only rocks will break em, found that out last year.....

I am also a Slick Trick fan but.... just bought some Magnus Snuufer SS 125's. First try on a 600 grain arrow was not up to my standards. A 525 proved better. When I shot a 500 Carbon Express Terminiator ---- they flew perfect. As good as, or better than my field points. I am truly impressed with their flight, ease of sharpness and quality.

There is a moose in Fairbanks with ones name on one right now. She is ging to meet Mr. Magnus next weekend.

I got tired of hearing about Slick tricks last season here, a guy at work gave me one, well Im a beliver now too, got some more , they were hard to get last year, and busted a nice 4 point! John

222, you will dig the Slick Tricks. There isn't anything out that cuts a bigger hole and shoots so accurate. I simply love what a 4 blade head does to critters (huge blood trails). I have wacked a truck load of deer, several turkeys and 4 bulls with the Slick Tricks. They are really hard to beat, especially for elk. You want the biggest blood trail possible for elk, and they provide it.

I don't buy into the "cut on contact penetrate deeper" hype. It just isn't the case on animals, especially if you hit any bone. The cut on contact stick into bone and stop quickly. Chisel points will break through bone. I have experienced this at length, especially when testing different broadheads in different medias as well as animals. In test medias, I use my broadhead extractor (www.flinchoutdoorgear.com) to pull them out. Cut on contacts always penetrate less than chisel points. Perhaps that is why nails have chisel points??? The G5's actually penetrated far less than any other chisel point head in wood type products. When shot into bone, the bone seems to grab onto the head and slow it down quickly. I am not knocking them at all. They are a fabulous heads. I am only pointing out my findings with chisel head type broadheads. Give me a good chisel point any day when critters are on the menu. Flinch
