I have a 1921 manufactured Savage 99 take-down in 250-3000 savage. It featured an integrated front site island and has a small screw on the right side that secures the brass blade in position.

I removed the rear sight and drifted in a blank dovetail in order to have an unobstructed view from the Lyman 30 1/2 tang sight I installed to the front sight. I now notice that the front sight is quite low and not particularly visible through the view of the aperture.

Does anyone know what front sight was utilized on my rifle to compliment the Lyman 30 1/2 rear tang to provide a good sight picture for hunting purposes?

Is it short short or long long (links to sights on ebay)

You have what I call a split post front sight. If you can't find a direct replacement I would start playing around with some sheet steel, nickle silver or brass and make one yourself. You might find some basic stock in a hobby store. Tang and receiver sight usually need a taller front blade than what the factory provided for open sights.

Thank you for the link Grogel. The original front sight I have right now is solid brass and is approximately the shape of the one you linked "short". It appears the Lyman "Long" would give me more height provided that it would fit in a rifle that was originally build for the "short"?

Was that Long Lyman available in 1921? Would that have been the front sight that savage would have used had the gun originally left the factory with the Lyman 30 1/2 tang sight?

In 1920, Savage offered the front sight with German silver bead, gold colored bead, or ivory bead. All three appear to be the same height. In 1922, it was only the German silver bead that was listed I believe.

Savage didn’t list tang sights in the catalogs or price lists as options at that time. I’m not sure you could order a tang sight from the factory.
