Just curious other peoples thoughts.
So I posted something for sale and dude says he'll take it.
Not a lot of money $40.
We exchanged address' by PM. I actually PM'd dude back cause he gave address with a number but without street, lane, ave, etc.. He replied with which to use again giving me address.
So, after a few days I was going to post office and sent dude small flat rate box before I got payment, hoping he not going to screw me for $40.
So I get dudes money order and see first 2 digits of his address are different than what he told me. WTF
I track package I sent and see it has ALERT " insufficient address" and is being returned to sender.
I dont know if dude had a brain fart (TWICE). Fist 2 digits he gave me are same number, first 2 digits on his return label are same number, but a different number than he gave me.
Wondering if I get box back do I just send him his $40 back? Minus $8 shipping? Tell him send me $8 I'll send box back?
Just curious how others would handle it.

And make him front the additional shipping because of it.

I’d hope he’d offer that right up front after his apology

This right here. Give him the chance to make it right... if he doesnt it will be time to ask him to cover the additional shipping.

First thing I’d do is, rather than just make this one minor decision on my own however I felt like at that moment, I’d post about it on a public forum. Maybe see how everyone else would deal with it and open what is a tiny minor transaction between two people up to a group vote. Decide this thing via committee. That always works out well.

Yeah it’s only $40 but there is also the added complexity of the $8 shipping, which if you eat that really cuts into the profit. $16 worth to be exact. If you try to get him to pony up who knows what he’ll do? Best to get some opinions.

Say he is fully understanding of the situation. This kind of thing has maybe happened to him before. A guy who doesn’t know his own address probably encounters hardships related to that in a daily basis, so he is going to understand. Or maybe not. Maybe he throws a fit and accuses you of trying to scam him for $8. Is your reputation as an Internet Merchant worth risking over $8? Best to leave that question up to The Committee.

In the scenario where the box doesn’t come back at all, what do we do here? Obviously you can’t resend the box to the correct address, you don’t even have it. Could you buy another and ship that one? The Committee is going to need more details before advising you. Ultimately it is going to come down to the rarity of them item and overall cost of replacement, should replacement be possible.

How about the delay in receipt of merchandise? Is there an appropriate place to assign fault for that? If this was a birthday gift for a loved one, and the birthday has passed, is the recipient even going to want it? As a Committee Member, I’m voting Yes. We don’t know so we have to assume he still wants it, to the extent a guy who doesn’t know where he lives has the agency to even make a decision like that.

Should there be compensation for everyone’s time? Those of us on The Committee believe so. At the very least we’ve each earned a cut. $8 is probably the right figure all things considered.
