Was on the hunt for a remington model 7 in 350 Rem mag and the thought occurred to me to just pick up a 338 win mag and just shorten the barrel to 21" and be done with it. I know ammo wise that would be more convenient just wanting a shorter barreled gun with more power. Thoughts ideas or suggestions welcome

If you want a compact magnum, try a Ruger 338 RCM...

2 RCMs on GunBroker. But they appear to be at gunbroker-cracksmoker prices though:

They are lighter than a featherweight compact

Many ways to skin that cat. I am going to cut the threads on a M70 338 Winchester that currently has a BOSS on it. The barrel length should finish between 22-22.5”. The thread portion is only 1” on it. It will work for my purposes. I am sure 21” would also.

I am in the 338 camp.

Had a 350 RM and it was fine, but I really like my 338-06's.

A RCM is a great choice, but I was already into the 338-06's when it came out.

If your shots will be mostly shorter ranges.... the 350 is a nice cartridge. As a handloader, the 35’s have the unique advantage of the possibility of using handgun bullets for relative inexpensive, low velocity plinking rounds.

If you’re looking at the longer ranges....the .338 WM shines! memtb

Almost identical recoil, 338 beats it in every way except size of the bullet hole. Brass,Bullets , load data and most importantly availability of said.

Just for [bleep] n' giggles,

Have you considered the 9.3 x 62 or 376 Steyr. Both work fine in 20" barrels

Ya!

I agree with CRS, I have a 338-06 that’s a shooter and when my barrel arrives I will have another built. If I were in your shoes I would get one built with the 22”-24” barrel.

If you can find a Tikka boar hunter in 338 it would be just what you are looking for. Short fluted barrel with open sights for backup. Ugly plastic stock but makes the whole set up very lite but kicks like a mule.

I think they make the Tikka Boar Hunter in 9.3x62 also. Now that’s an under appreciated round.

I know this is an old thread but found it interesting, I've owned a 338-06, 338 Gibbs and my current big bore is a 350 Rem Mag on a Pre-64 Model 70 long action with a 24 inch barrel, allowing for the long seating of bullets. I've been able to easily get 2800 fps plus with the 225 accubond and sierra gameking. It may not be exactly like a 338 Win Mag but I can tell you that no animal would be able to tell the difference.

I liked my 350 RM's. I've had four 338's and two 350's. If you're looking at more than 400 yards the 338 would be better. If you're in the brush, you can't beat the 350 RM Remington 600 or 7.

I have quite a few 35 caliber rifles 35 Rem, 358 Win, 350 RM, 35 Whelen.

I finally got rid of all the 338's, I think when I bought a 300 Weatherby and it shot:

300 Weatherby, Remington 700 Classic, 200 grain Nosler Partition, 215, 78.2 grains RE 26, 0.66 .71 & .71 MOA (Three five shot groups) I saw zero need for the 338's. And the 350 RM was still the best in the thick stuff and good to go up to 400 yards.

I prefer classic.
