They kept it working and hunting.. that's what most saddle rings were bought for. Tough to find ones not messed up.

Think the barrel is cut down?
It was/is a tool just like a rope and saddle.

Think the barrel is cut down?
It was/is a tool just like a rope and saddle. Big time cut... They say the barrel is 18.5", but wondering if it's not 19.5". I can't imagine somebody cutting the original dovetail off, and then cutting the new one right at the end like this. But if you cut off just over 1/2", it'd look like this.

It is matching numbers, the grip is factory checkered and the forearm is not checkered? RIGHT! How many 32-40 SRC's do we know about now? The last I heard there were 4.

Do you think this is an original 32-40 SRC with replaced buttstock and butt plate, barrel cut back? I have records of seven 32-40 SRCs. One is number 52562 which is only 43 numbers away from this gun (52605).

I dunno? If somebody did that yesterday I would agree however fundamentally guns are tools and most people throughout history have treated guns as such. I have a buddy who's grandfather was old school. So old school that he came over from Greece in 1905 and got out west just in time for the San Francisco earthquake. He's been gone for a number of years but I remember that all of his shovels were concaved from years of repeated sharpening. Shovels were tools and so were Savage 99s too many folks. And, to me, that is what it is and you can't change history. However, I would not pay that seller 1K for that tool!

Do you remember that guy a that found a crispy 32-40 SRC in his deceased grandparents attic (I think) and came here asking about it? He was in the Charlottesville VA area somewhere I think. If I recall the DOM was right around 1900. I wonder what ever happened to that gun? It must have wound up somewhere.
That was a while ago.

32-40's weren't available in 1899's until 1903.

Shot my 1899B in 32-40 this morning. What an accurate rifle!
