Nice. From a Rock Island Auction sale.

https://www.rockislandauction.com/detail/76/3089/factory-engraved-savage-model-1895-deluxe-rifle

Interesting sale. There was a 1969 Roe Clark letter included, in which rifle #6736 didn't have any mention of engraving or checkering, and so Roe included pictures from the 1900 catalog to show the various grades of engraving. None of which applied to an engraved 1895 done by Ulrich, obviously. Go far enough back, and eventually you find a time where all of us were "new" to the "old Savage rifles. Beautiful rifle.

It looks like many more round barrels (R) than half-octal (HO)or octal (O).

No surprise that hardware stores were a large part of distribution. (can ya even buy a gun at a hardware store anymore?)

Couple of rifles went to the 2nd New York Sportsman Show in 1896.

That rifle is now owned by a collector in Texas and will appear in excruciating detail in my next book.

Neat David, Thanks for providing more and more details and history on these special 99s! None of us bottom feeders would ever get another chance to see them! The only thing that's excruciating is waiting for the book to come out!

So this is a "Factory Engraved" rifle in a style not cataloged by the factory nor documented in the ledger at the time it was made?

Well... no engraving styles were shown in catalogs for the 1895. The engraving on the 1895's was done by the Marlin engraver, and looked very similar to Marlin engraving styles. The 1895/1897 catalogs, I think, just said to contact Savage about inquiries about costs and types of engraving.

Roe sent him the 1899 engraving styles created by Enoch Tue in 1899.

And, unfortunately, a number of engraved rifles were never recorded in the ledgers. I have 2 myself that weren't recorded, but are obviously B engraving and A2 engraving.

I know a squirrel who claims those are interchangeable, he has been known to sip rum and spin a yarn.

I have heard numerous times that there were 9 engraved 1895's. Six will be covered in my book. Five of them have more or less the same engraving. The one that went to Arthur Savage has different engraving.

Roe counted the 1895's that appear in the ledger book. I don't think others have turned up. Most were done for Stratton as with the one you owned.

As for the 1899's... there have been several that were done by Tue that don't show in the logs.

That's what I've heard, Roe counted 9 engraved in the ledgers.

But the one Rick posted the ledger for is an engraved 1895, and the ledger is blank for engraving. #6736.

So that's 10, right? And possibly more?
