Could someone measure the muzzle diameter of their factory barrelled Mark X or Zastava Mauser and tell me what the diameter is and approx contour.

Thanks.

From memory, the Mark X had slim barrels around 0.565 inches. I am particularly and interested in the .30-06 & 0.270 Win barrel contours. I think the 270 had nominal 150 thou wall thickness but the .30-06 was a bit on the thing side at circa 130-140 thou wall thickness. I believe srrels were 23.6 inches, 60 cm long.

Thanks.

Further research - thanks Google and this website turned up Mark X rifles had 0.560 inch muzzles and a light weight contour - pretty whippy.

Unsure what shank length the barrels had - probably 3 inches as the overall weight for these wood stocked rifles was circa 7.9lbs (3.6kg).

I have emailed Zastava for information and will post answer when received.

My research indicates Win Mod 70 Fwt had 22 inch long barrels with 0.570 inch muzzles.

The consensus amongst those re-barrelling / putting together a light weight rifle is short shank with a muzzle diameter of 0.60 inches at 24 inches length for 0.30-06 rifles.

Apparently some top level US custom rifle makers were using 0.58 inch mizzle diamters on .300 rifles but have now moved to .60 inch muzzles over the last 10 -15 years: easier to find multiple loads which shoot well.

I have a bone stock Interarms Mark X in 308. Not sure what the contour is but It doesnt look whippy to me. If I had to guess I would say #3.
Bigger contour than my Ruger tanger or my Rem model 700 or my Abolt.

robthom,
I just measured the muzzle diameter of three of my factory Mk-X barrels. None of these are of recent manufacture - they are at least 25-30 years old. All are 24-ish inches long - might be 60 CM, I didn't check that.

.243 Win - .558"
.270 Win - .552"
.25-06 Rem - .558"

BTW, I have measured plenty of older US made rifles in .30 caliber with muzzles this size. I can't speak to what they do these days.

Hope this helps,
Rex

Thank you for the measurements. I would take from that the barrel muzzle diameter is / was 0.560, within manufacturing tolerances. I read on the Lilja or Kreiger web pages that measurements were +/- 0.005 inch.

The .270 Win could be an outlier UNLESS the intended diameter is/was 0.550 inch. That would makes it a current fly / feather weight barrel according to most custom barrel makers. Actually 0.550 plus tolerances is more in keeping, probably.

As I wrote earlier, I had it in my mind the barrels were 0.565 inch at muzzle but research on this forum gave me 0.560 inch, making them a light weight sporter contour or #1 contour.

Research on this forum / our own Mule Deer suggests a 0.600 inch muzzle diameter for a .30-06 is about right for a light weight - a muzzle barrel wall thickness in the 0.145-0.15 (0.146) inch range. Therefore, a .270Win could get away with a 0.580 inch muzzle diameter (0.1515inch) but a bit light for a .30-06 (0.136 inch).
