Then there are honorary pallbearers, they don't trust you to not drop the casket.

Never. I've only been to one funeral in my life.

I've done it maybe 8 or 10 times. The 1st was when I was 8 or 10. The funeral was for the downs syndrome son of family friends. I think he was 6 or 7.

As head of the Casket prior to flag folding .
E 5 or E6 in charge of firing sqd would collect 3 spent shells
( blanks)
March em over to me.
Present them to me.
Then return to the firing sqd.
Then pallbears would start the flag fold on my subdued commands.
Do my formal inspect of triangle at head of casket.
Insert the 3 spent shells as last part.
3 volleys 3 shells.
An extra thing for the next of kin in my mind.
Then I would Present flag to the OIC.

OIC,s had it tough presenting flag to next of kin.
Didnt envy them that at all.

3 spent shells in the flag aint in the ceremony regs.
But it was something I did on my detail.
3 volleys 3 shells.
3 is the number of completion from what I always was told also.

Well done, Rene.

A couple of times. One was for a friend who weighed somewhere north of 350 lbs. 8 of us on the flat ground and 2 funeral home folks joined us for the steps outside the church.

A dozen times give or take….assuming I’ll do my father in laws at the end of this week.

Did it for my Pappaw just a few weeks ago. It was an honor. Career Army, Korean War Vet, Silver Star, 3 Purple Hearts, on and on. Lived a great life and made it to 92. Of the six that I’ve done, he and my Dad were my greatest honor. Loved both men dearly.

I guess 8-10 times. Family mostly. It's always an honor to be asked.

The hardest was my uncle. There were only 6 of us (4 men with bad backs and two young teens) and a skinny female funeral director. We had to carry him down two flights of cement steps in front of the church. We almost lost him a couple times. Usually it's more ceremonial and you walk beside the casket while it's rolled on a cart.

The most special was for my brother. I wasn't a part of it, trying to support my mom. After the service concluded, our hunting camp buds, who were his pallbearers, all came up the church aisle to get his flag covered casket. They were all wearing Columbia Quad duck hunting coats in old school brown camo. I had held it together until then, but that got me. Still does.

One of the worst was three young children of our friend, the children died in a house fire.

Had the honor of being a pall bearer twice and have given the eulogy twice.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I've been a pallbearer several times.

I've given a eulogy twice, the biographical sketch for both parents.

It's an honorable duty to be asked to do.

It's no fun when the casket is small and weighs little. That one hurt.

I’ve been honored to do it maybe 6-8 times. Most recent was April for my girlfriends aunt. We were still wearing masks in April, so I ordered a couple of black cloth ones on Amazon.
I did not want to be wearing a disposable mask at the funeral.
Kinda glad for the mask, as I was ugly crying as we carried her casket out of the church. I loved that woman. We spent the last several Thanksgiving’s and Christmas’ at her house. We got no where to go now.

Probably 8 to 10 times and I'm honored each and every time. However, packing a 350 lb body and a 300 lb casket isn't fun, even with six pallbearers!

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

A few times. The most recent was my old man, out of the little church up in the hills above the family farm. Took a bit of time out to visit the graveyard where a good number of the ancestors lie, including my grandfather, who I also carried long before, and his wife who died when my old man was a boy.
