You put the wrong title on this thread, It should read ......."My 30-06 is all I really want".........
You could need many more rifles but are drawing a line in the sand and putting your head in the ground........good luck with that

Maybe on the 06 but the 7.62x63 or 30-06 is no longer in the gi supply line like 7.62x51. Having a firearm chambered for Gov't issued carts is looking forward to your possible needs not backwards. Mb

It was all I needed for two decades until I got on the Fire and discovered I needed other 20 rifles. These days I pretty much use my 270.

I didn't realize rifles were heavy or certain brands of rifles wouldn't shoot and certain bullets wouldn't kill until I arrived here.

The 06 is all I need now! Fine looking rifles, and I've mentioned a Kimber or Cooper recently, but no need. I'm a 62 years of nothing but blue steel and walnut, and 10glocks Supergrade in 06 is exactly what I'd buy if I ever buy a new one. Thats a rifle!

Outgrew the '06 when I turned 18 and could buy my own guns, haven't wanted or needed one in over 30 years At 55 years of age, I thought I had also. Now, closing on 70 in a few months, depending on one's outlook I am either "up" to four or "down" to four. I/ve a Sauer 200, Blaser K95, Merkel 141 double, and my favorite for the last couple years....... Blaser R93 Stutzen, 30-06, with a side of 9.3 x 62 and what tickles me most is that I'm shooting 180 gr. Cor-lokts (that were given to me) out of all four! ya! GWB PS: BTW, a 20" barrel works fine on an '06 a couple @ +/- 175 paces

Generations of hunters hunted their entire lifetime completely satisfied with the .30-06, never feeling the need or desire for anything else. Fast forward to current times with more disposable income than in the past and it's a completely different story. I'm happy with my .30-06 although I have a .35 Whelen, I can't think of any game in North America that those two rifles wouldn't handle.

For the last 100 years, there is an entire industry built on the idea that the '06 is lacking right? It's never been clearly explained just exactly what it lacks...but they keep trying, and I guess some of us keep buying the latest and greatest. And that's ok, we got the disposable income. I'm just as guilty as anyone, I have had romances with almost every military cartridge adopted since the late 1800's...with the glaring omission of the 5.56. After 55 years of experiments, nothing really stands out as superior to the '06 by any measure.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Yep. Put a gun to my head and I could easily get by with just an '06. Wouldn't want to, but could.
.30-06's dominate in my accumulation of bolt guns - Springfields, Mausers, and Winchesters (mostly Springfields) - and get worked with quite a bit. From mouse fart light cast bullet loads through full snort jacketed loads and everything in between gets shoved through them; about as versatile a cartridge that a fella could want.

My dad's sporterized 30-06 using 150 gr factory ammo.....Not gonna take away any virtues from the good 'ol 30-06. For most it is the only cartridge they need. No need to prove ya wrong there R Bobby because I have no case.to make against the 30-06 nor would I want to try and make a case against it. I wonder!......Are all you 30-06 owners gonna put all of your non 30-06 rifles up for sale??? Afterall, a 30-06 is all ya need. Right?....LOL!

Well my 30-06 has never failed me but my first and second distraction the 270 and 7x57 haven't either. I have given up on the one cartridge does all scam and need 20 or so specialized cartridges to do the same thing I used to do with a 30-06 and a 223.

I'll do everything I need with my 7-08
Had several 06's - they're okay. If I need more than the 7-08, likely a 30-06 isn't enough so I doubt I'll have another.

If i stuck with one caliber, it would most likely be 338-06. Its my "go to" for most game animals short of elk and it would work for elk if I didnt use a 338 WM. I have several 30-06's, just like the 338-06 better.

Someone here on the fire once said "Why doesn't anybody panic buy 30-06 ammo? Because a man with a 30-06 doesn't panic" I actually do not own a 06 currently but I have and its a hard cartridge to say anything bad about. But when you guys decide to sell all of your "non 30-06" rifles just let me know!!

It takes a lot of years for some guys fiddling with a bunch of different rifles in different chamberings to come to that conclusion

Yep the 30-06 is about as perfect an all-around hunting cartridge as there is, I always keep at least one in My safe, latey I have been toying with the idea of another T3x Superlite (Sportsmans warehouse version) chambered in 30-06 👍........Hb

Yep. Even though I haven't remotely done the amount of big game hunting that some here have. Was my first rifle, still have it. After 35 years have some others that might be better suited in certain situations, but the other 90% of the time, no. When it's time to pare down a couple or three 06's will finish me for the distance

I’ve killed every species of game in Alaska short of musk ox and bison with a. 30-06. I’d rather have a 300wm though if I had to pick one.

From my own experience here it is less than ideal for our buffalo at one end of the scale, and less than ideal for rabbits, hares and foxes at the other. Not much good for gamebirds or ducks either, come to that. It could therefore never really be all I need. However for game between those, like goats, pigs and our several species of deer, it does a great job. I've had at least one for the past 40 years, and a light little Browning in this chambering is one of my favourite hunting rifles.

Yes, Mr. Dan At one time I had 5 30-06s then went for a period of time without ONE. It's is just too versatile and patriotic 'here' to NOT have one. Yes, I could get by with just my 06.
What fun would that be ?
I sure have had fun and killed a bunch of game, WT, Fox, Coyotes, even Crows with many other cartridges. I'd miss having OPs to use others, SO I have others. Jerry

The old ‘06 is probably one of the most versatile rounds ever.
But talk of just one round isn’t Loony.
I have a couple of ‘06’s, but a safe full of diversity.
Choosing one at the exclusion of others may be interpreted as racist.
We just can’t go there; it’s not PC.

The first 24 years of my hunting life I was without a .30'06. Then in 1988 I started preparing for my first elk hunt so I "needed" another rifle. I decided on a Winchester M70 Featherweight chambered in .30'06 and killed the best bull I've been blessed with. Still am attached to my 7x57 but, if the number of rifles count the old '06 is superior and can do it all.
Shew me thy ways, O LORD: teach me thy paths. "there are few better cartridges on Earth than the 7 x 57mm Mauser" "the .30 Springfield is light, accurate, penetrating, and has surprising stopping power"

Another 30-06 group hug! Its true the 30-06 can't be beat for patriotism and tradition. But for actual use, there is always a better choice for any application.

Some of us are good enough that we can use it for anything without an issue. Others need the perfect cartridge for whatever they happen to hunt.

I with ya. If I sold all my rifles down to one, it'd be my Winchester M70 Super Grade in .30-06. When she was brand new... Very nice !! I'd never hunt that rifle. Too pretty. I have 3, in '06. They aren't too pretty to hunt with. Trust me..... But do I want to hunt the 1.25MOA, the 1 MOA, or the inch groups at 300 yards rifle (I haven't shot it for group at 100 yet....)

Mike It’s called FUN w/dick & jane Cartridges. Jerry I've done it too but I've also killed groundhogs to moose with the 30-06 without trouble and have covered the spectrum from 110 grain loads to 220's. These days I like 150's for most things. I have a bunch of Hornady IL's loaded up with 4895

For years I’ve planned & preped to hunt Elk. I’ve run the gamut from 8 RM ——> 270 for Elk I’ve decided *for me* the 7 RM is nearly the perfect all round b g rifle because of its trajectory. I don’t discredit the 06, it’s just not as flat shooting. OTOH for *my* WT hunting a 25-06 or 270 would have done ALL I have needed to do. and I could have done it all with an 06. There are no flies on the old Patriot. Jerry

I'd love to have a 7x57, and a M70 FW in 7mm08 is what I was leaning towards until I got my Tikka. Last 5 deer I've killed was with 30-30 levergun n iron sights, my favorite way to shoot, but at 62 my eyes are slipping. I needed a scope and the M65 Tikka stepped right out in front of me. I had to have it! I'll be loading me some big flatnose Hawks and Sierra's i already had. I believe at about 2600fps they'll be devastating doe pills! I'm seeing clearly I should've went to the 06 long time ago!

When I was growing up my father wouldn't let us get a 30/06. We could have 300 Win Mags, 308 Win, 270 Wins, 30-30s, 8 Rems, or 7 Rem Mag. I always wondered why? He explained to me on a moose hunt when he was borrowing a 30/06 Husky FN High Power with K4 that weighs like 10 lbs but kicks like a pussy cat. I wanted to make sure that nobody would want to steal our guns our in Kenny Lake because besides 30/06 and 30-30 there were no other sources of ammo. That is why, he said, I would take the 8 Rem mag or the light 300 Win Mags to the local Kenny Lake gravel pits during the annual turkey shoot. He would let a couple of the bigger thieves in the valley shoot them and then proceed to do well. My first 30/06 was a SC Baco featherweight deluxe from 2008. Since then they have accumulated. I think I have 12 or 13 of them right now. I wouldn't need more than one but I am just entering my prime of gun loco accumulation phase and I don't own a supercub or an SJX Phantom. They are a great platform and they are ready for service.

Plenty of cartridges I could “just hunt with… “

This year I have four kids hunting here in Montana along with my wife and myself. Part of our current battery for the coming season is a 6mm-06, two .25-06s, a .30-06, and a .35 Whelen. Hard to get away from the '06 case it seems.

RickyBobby, didn't you spawn a 13 page "The 30-06 is the greatest thing ever" thread already within the last year? lol.
Don't think the '06 can do anything that any of the cartridges I am using in its stead can't do...but its got coolness by the bushel.

Late to this party but I think this was conclusively covered in the great book " one man, one rifle, one land" by Y Jones.
Culminating a 25-year hunting career, Jones hunted every North American species and subspecies with his .30-.06 remington 700 with a leupld 3-9 vx 2.
Great book and easy read.

spence Like This: [quote=Cascade]Worth noting that every big game species in North America has been successfully hunted with the good ol' 30-06 cartridge. This fellow did almost all of his hunts with the 165 grain Nosler Partition, bumping up to the 200 grain Nosler Partition for a few of the really big animals. Uh Huh -- Very Nice Jerry

I probably won't either, at least much. I have two Super Grades, one in .30-06 and one in .270. They are very pretty and extremely well made. But they are heavy. I've got Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x40s on each. They're really heavy. I had been hunting with a 50's vintage Mannlicher Schönauer .30-06 with a 70s vintage Weaver K4 in a Paul Jaeger QD mount handed down to me by my Grandfather. But that gun is retired while it's in good shape to hand down to my son. I bought a Ruger M77 stainless boat-paddle stocked .30-06 years ago that I also gave to my son recently and replaced with a Browning X-Bolt Composite Stalker. So my X-Bolt will be my primary hunting .30-06. My Super Grade, X-Bolt and Mannlicher are my only .30-06s.

Spence Whaaaat?! A Remington and a Loopy? The trigger didn't freeze? The bolt handle didn't snap off the first time he cycled the action? The scope didn't poop the bed after a few rounds? I don't believe it In seriousness though with the mono bullets on the market now is there a reason/purpose for a very heavy loaded 30-06? I know the Partition does a lot of damage through fragmentation/shedding a good chunk of its lead core after impact, but it seems like a 165gr Barnes would be even heavier and with about the same surface area as a heavy 30-06 load. I mean other than "I like them" which is just fine. But it seems any medium bore cartridge can do the same thing now (if it couldn't before)

I like the 308 with a 150 and about 2600fps. The 30-06 could of course do the same. I saw a post here where someone ran a partition like 4 FEET through a brown bear with similar ballistics.

All the above being true, if our history of cartridges never got above a 7mm bore, we would likely all say the exact same stuff about the 7x57.

Suppose if the Mono loses its petals, it sure isn't heavier than the heavy Partition anymore...dunno if it goes through the same amount of bear!
I'm pretty much landed at about the same with the 308 right now. Looking into loading some 130 TTSX pretty soon though.
BobBrown, good luck with the 7x57! Can only say I tagged one whitetail with it, but a 140gr Trophy Bonded Tip over IMR 4350 didn't leave much to be desired at all. Not the fastest powder in the Federal data but it worked.
Really can't imagine anything else doing anything practical that it can't, no.

Not sure I see where you are going with that. But the idea for me was to not crank it up to 10 and slam my shoulder when 2600fps keeps the brass happy and does the job.
300 savage and 30/30 are good ones too.

Been shooting this one exclusively for awhile now. Nothing special; just a standard M70 .30-06 with a 4x Lyman. It's been in here many times before, but it's a favorite go-to companion that groups well with cheapo ammo (180 grain Winchester Power Points). It's killed deer, coyotes and lots of TX pigs without an issue. It looks pretty good, too. Bob

VAHillbilly, I'm looking at about the same performance here, or a 130gr TTSX for 2900 fps, starting load basically, or dropped 2 grains and loaded in 7.62x51mm LC brass. Like you said, easy on the shoulder, easy on the brass, easy on my Garand. And the cupped metal buttplate on a Kar 98k is a real shoulder tenderizer haha.

I've found moose die just fine with C&C..... from .243 to ..338 WM. Still, if it floats your stick, have at it. They will do fine, and, they are in stock! My wife, son and I are going caribou hunting in about 3 weeks. We may all be packing '06s, or not, with C&C factory rounds My poor old .338 may also go (not fired in over 10 years - it is pouting) with 250 gr Hornady RN (definitely "over-kill") for me, or the '94 in 30-30 (not killed with since '66 -REALLY pouting!). Decisions, decisions.... What the hell - I'll take them all.

Dunno if I need to, but I sure like to.
And right now I'm loading Barnes bullets cheaper than the cheapest box of CnC ammo in the store.
If it were all about "need", 30-06 is long past plenty for whitetail in the first place :P

Exactly! I've killed my last 5 deer with iron sighted 30-30 & C&C. I'm 62, eyes getting bad, walking not so easy in these mountains! I want to reach out there and know what I touched them with will bring em down quick! I've already got some good C&C reloaded and ready for the 06, never rule out an alternative!

If you think so then you’re 100% correct. I have made it a point never to argue the utility of the 30-06.

I have a bunch of rifles. In the past I only hunted with two: my 30-06 and 22-250. As a general rule I always take a back up rifle but never needed to resort to one.

I’ve killed every species of game in Alaska short of musk ox and bison with a. 30-06. I’d rather have a 300wm though if I had to pick one. Have you taken any grizz with the 06 in Alaska?

Yes, finally! Years ago I was gifted a 1963 Rem 700 30-06 with a 20" factory barrel. It came to me with several boxes of 180 grain factory ammo. After firing, with the rifle's steel butt plate, I put it away. it was just too much for me and besides I had several other rifles to choose from at the time. None of the others were as punishing at that rifle. Fast forward a few years I have learned to handload and dabble in the world of cast boolits, that old 30-06 has renewed its usefulness for where and how I shoot anyway. I still keep a bolt action 30-30 around for cast targets, and a 7mm-08 when I am invited to shoot longer distances but the 30-06 with something less than 180g shoulder killers is in my hands. Yes, other calibers may be better but this old girl suits me just fine.

mjac: my dad bought me a M700 30/06 in 1962, 20" barrel and steel butt plate as you said. I can confirm that it would kick the snot out of you! (I had asked for a M70 FWT but the guy at the local gun shop convinced Dad that the brand new M700 was a much better rifle). Still have the rifle, but ti's been re-barrelled and re-stocked :-)

southtexas, 150g~130g pills and few different powders have gotten my jacketed loads down to very tolerable recoil levels even with the steel butt plate. Not to mention cast shooting where you have you don't know it fired type recoil levels. Nevertheless, I just yesterday purchased a stock I'll be putting a recoil pad on. I have been wanting to put the original BDL, with its cut fleur de lis checkering, stock away for safekeeping. The kid has already laid claim to it.
