Sorry. I'm out. Been practiced by every society as long as there have been societies. I don't owe anyone shidt, and I abhor the victim culture of a people that have been free for several generations now here. Not to mention the treatment of the Irish when they came etc. etc etc.

But there is no such thing as benign slavery. Maybe I'm selling the video short?

You are selling the video short. Yes slavery in America was horrible, but there was much more slavery elsewhere.

Based on your post, I'll give it a watch tomorrow when I've good enough service.

Coincidentally, the last slaveholding Americans were Alaska Natives, they were quite pissed when the US bought AK from Russia and enforced the 13th Amendment. In fact, one of the many complaints to this day of the Tlingit people is that the US stole "property" from them without due compensation.

I haven’t watched the video. All I know is that this country pays for slavery and it’s leftovers every day. Besides that it is and was evil and I wish it had never existed here.

A woman did not own her own body, from the moment of birth a mother did not own her own children, a father could do nothing to protect them. Families were subject to being torn asunder at any time. Slaves lived in a state of life imprisonment from the moment of birth, consigned to a life of labor, often hard labor.

One quarter of the population of our Southern States lived that way, slaves were actual majorities of the population in South Carolina and Mississippi.

Yep, its an indelible stain upon our collective history. Doesn’t matter about the Middle East, Africa, Brazil etc etc, we are supposed to live up to our own values, not theirs.

We are paying for that sin until this very day.

OTOH, there hasn’t been legal slavery here since 1865, and the descendants of those slaves now get to live in what is still the greatest Nation the world has ever seen. I can relate, I’m Irish Catholic, if the Brits hadn’t colonized us in the past I might not be here.

Slavery persisted here because it was profitable, those who constantly bring the topic up to divide us do so because it profits them.

Our original sin is killing off the.people who lived here first. Making deals with them and forcing them west then not honoring our treaties.

MAC is correct and many others have good points. I submit that we do still have a form of slavery here now and will until people wake up to the fact that we all are created equal. It is only us that divide and label each other with color, race and class. Blacks have been taken advantage of since reclamation by democrats by being taught that they were set upon by evil republicans. Many southerners cannot get over the tragedy of Reclamation after the War. Indians are encouraged to destroy any sign of assimilation. We are being split with wild fanatic environment theory that divides us and destroys our freedom. Whites have been lectured by authoritarian politicians of both parties as to how evil we are because slavery came here with us when we landed.

We have a lot of despots on this forum that try mightily to divide and destroy constitutional discussion. We have many congressional politicians that are from foreign slave owning lands that hate America and are working from within to destroy us. We have a political party, democrat, that is openly Marxist/Socialist and attempting to destroy our nation. They're doing a splendid job of it so far and some of us are helping them. Republican party RINOs are destroying our Nation with their hate America First agenda. We are locked in a great war for our freedom and the freedom of the Republic as it was founded. If the democrat socialists win we will no longer have a constitution. Our elections are not free and fair anymore and haven't been for a very long time. This one was just so in your face sloppily stolen that we can no longer let it pass unchallenged. We must win this fight.

I didnt watch the vid either but my opinion is simple.

Best thing that ever happened for the black americans that are here now was for their ancestors to be brought here as slaves. Not condoning slavery at all but it's simple.
They actually have opportunity today in America thanks to the struggles of their ancestors.

What would they have if still in Africa?

English slavery of a sort was practiced clear into the 1960's. They'd transport orphaned or abandoned children to be virtual slave laborers in Australia and other commonwealth countries. The US wasn't innocent of their treatment of orphans, either.

Read up on the Cherokee Freedmen . After the civil war, the slaves owned by the Cherokee tribe were freed and they've been trying to be part of the Cherokee nation ever since. They've been members or not members, back and forth. It's still going on today.

Yes, slavery is America's original sin. Who could have imagined that bringing uncivilized, unassimilable people to live in your midst could be a negative? /sarc
After the rebellion in Haiti, we should have got wise and deported every slave of color. But no, people were too greedy and short-sighted.
Slavery was worse for the owners than it was the slaves and almost everything that's wrong with America politically can be traced to slavery and our failure to deport them.

It could very well be argued that it was the revolt in Haiti that set the question of emancipation back 40 years!

Greed did play a part. But it was more of what do we do with them after emancipation? It was quite doubtful that many in the north or south would have been willing to fork over passage money home.

Up until the Civil war, poor southerners were duped into believing that their way of life depended on slavery even though very few of them ever owned a slave. They were kept poor because so many jobs were done by slaves but the slaveowners managed to convince them that slavery was helping them. Nothing has changed. The Democrats still dupe the people into believing that they're being helped when in fact they're being shafted.

No doubt everything you wrote is true. If they had just seen how costly the Civil War turned out to be, they would have thought different. Could have paid for purchasing all the slaves and giving them passage and some pocket change once they got there.

No, instead "free" labor and "free" ass clouded to much judgement.
