Extra military/police presence is needed because scenes from January 6th did tremendous damage to the United States. One wonders how can someone lead the free world if they can not get their own house together. Those scenes involving halloween clad people can never be repeated.

That logic only works when you don't allow nightly assaults on a federal building elsewhere. Assaults that were nightly, occurred over several months, and were much, much more violent and destructive

Washington is highly monitored location. What happens in Portland, Saint Louis,....... is of little interest just as if it would be happening in Lyon instead of Paris. The lack of local response can be attributed by fact that local politicians fear not being re-elected if they do something about demonstrations. They see demonstrators as their own electorate. For them it is long-term loose-loose situation. Left unchecked for long time such places become economic ghost towns of despair.
