Well, it looks as though I will be overnighting in King Salmon AK on September 28th and October 11th. Anyone from here at 24hr care to join another bear hunter and I over dinner and a brew or two?

I use to live in King Salmon, the main hotel burned down last year. The other one is a B+B sort of thing and serve up a pretty good prime rib dinner. Its called the D&D restarant and Naknek Hotel. 907-246-4430 or 246-4444. The Quinat is gone, they sort of burned it down to the ground. It was a good 40 dollar a night flop that they were getting up to around 400 a nite in season. No great loss. No body was in the place when it when up. My guess, it was another King Salmon Naknek insurance swindle. Who knows. Go say hi to Sam "He got what he deserved" Egli. If you ever caught that documentary about that fool who was petting Brown Bears and got ate. He's a pretty good guy, Likes big handguns!! There is also the bar and a bank and that is about it.

Phil,

If I had known you would have been intersted in a hunt trade I would be hunting with you for sure. Maybe I can do a moose hunt with you soon.
I am hunting with Gary LaRose. References checked out good. I am hopeful. Hunting near Pumice Creek as near as I can tell.

gmsemel, thanks for the heads up on stuff to do. I was advised to stay at the Antlers Inn, Know anything about it? Where is the best place to buy lures for Silver Salmon and what should I get? I have been in and through Atwater Calif. and it is a LONG ways from the Alaska Penninsula in more ways than one, eh?

A handful of vibrax lures is really all you need for silver fishing.

I have stayed at the King Ko Inn in King Salmon a couple of times. It's next to the Airport, across the street from Eddies (the bar and eatery) also about 1/2 a block from the grocery store if you have forgotten something.

Have a great time! Bear hunting on the Penn is one of the most exciting hunts of a lifetime!

I'm not sure why they are coming out so small. These pictues were from pre-digital camera days and were orginally scanned in. Will try another one.

I also meant to tell Safariman that the king ko inn in King Salmon has small Morgan type buildings for rooms. Not very fancy but very functional and as reasonable as a room can be in the bush.

Art,

Isn't the guy on the left Tracy something? He was on the tube guiding a fella for moose and griz on some outdoors show. I believe the guiding buisness was called Blue Mountain Lodge??

The Antler is a flop house at best with the Quinanat gone well I would rather stay at the D+D but if its only for a night or two, maybe you could stand it. As for Atwater, well I am surprise how much I have gotten to like the area. OK its California, but they do have some good ranges around. The Sun Rise over the Sierra's was something to see this morning, high thin overcast and it was something to remember. All and all you have to do what you have to do.

Like you were already told, the only place to buy lures or any fishing related gear is at the AC store next to Eddies...one problem, they are about sold out of everything and the next barge with supplies is scheduled for the middle of next month and it is always late....So you better bring what ya need.

The Silvers have been hitting pretty good for the last couple weeks, you'll see the tailend of the run at best.

A place to stay is a crapshoot, all I could recommend is booking something soon or you might not have a place to stay, your hitting town when things will be as busy as they get...

The food is fair at Eddies if you can deal with the drunks, its more a bar that restaurant.

We were up the lake last week and saw plenty of bears, I took a couple photos you can view at this link if you want

Here is a local info list (I've posted here before) that should still be pretty current......

Local Information for the greater King Salmon/Naknek area.
Current August 2006

The following listed businesses DO NOT have my personal recommendation.
I have little to no personal experience with any of them.
These listings were offered by the local tourist information center
and a variety of other sources.
Some, even thought listed as "Lodge" "Cabins" or "Hotel"
may only be a couple rooms above a local tavern
or a single cabin or room in someones back yard.

By all means, do your own research before booking.

You should have a great hunt with Gary. He runs a good camp, in a good area and has outstanding guides.

Phil,

Thanks for the heads up, I am looking forward to the hunt and getting ready by shooting my 416 Rigby until my brain starts to delaminate then running up and down bleachers with waders full of ice water smile . Should be about toughned up by Oct 1. Serioulsly, I am trying to get into good physical condition and am staying in practice with the big guns.

Jeff,

GREAT post and thanks a TON for the info! I will get something booked up tommorrow. I am leaning toward a B&B for the ambience and experience etc.

I used to live in King Salmon a long time ago. Dorothy Besch is sweet and I believe was one of my teachers. Have fun on your trip.
