There was an edge to his humor as well, he frequently made fun of current events and world leaders like Joe Stalin, Hollywood types, and government idiocy which fit well with his outlandish elaborate machines which pretty well did very little.

His cartoon "inventions" were very elaborate machines to do a semi-menial task as well. like 95 things happen and you end up with toast getting loaded in a toaster and toasted.
In Britain it was Heath Robinson, also a cartoonist drawing ridiculously complicated machines to carry out simple tasks, so there, and to some degree here in Oz, it is a "Heath Robinson contraption" rather than a "Rube Goldberg". Means the same thing though.
