Got my dad one at bass pro for squirrels, & it won't shoot in the same place twice. This is a gas piston, not a springer. Put a 3-9 Vortex scope from another rifle on it, & I know the scope is good. Shots are from 30 yards using Crosman .22 red penetrator 16 gr as this was all they had. Is this air rifle junk, or is it the pellets we're using?

The Vortex scope went tits up. 😜 B.S. it did the exact same thing as the centerpoint that came with rifle. It's the rifle or the pellets. Anyone have any real help?

Break-barrel air rifles take some finessing to shoot well. It's about the hold. They are all a bit different. Light hold, hard hold, location of front support.
I started out shooting 3" groups at 15 yards (Hatsan 125). After I figured out the hold, the gun will do 1" at 40 yards.
Are you and Dad new to these type of guns?

He's had a few & done fairly well with them. I believe these pellets with the plastic red based are the trouble. We're gonna get some decent lead ones & try again.

My 22 cal does it's best shooting with the JSB 18.13gr. It's pretty good with the basic Crosman 14.3gr also.

Yeah; buy a selection of quality pellets and try them all. Read up on how to shoot break barrel guns accurately. If that Vortex isn’t rated for airguns, replace it with one that is, or be prepared to utilize their famous warranty, although I’m not sure it covers misuse. Read the reviews on Pyramyd Air and you may get some ideas. One reviewer said his doesn't like lightweight pellets. Even though it doesn’t have a big, honkin’ spring pushing it, there’s still a piston slamming into the end of the cylinder.

I did a lot of reading and watching vid-reviews before buying the Hatsan 125's. One trend I noted with the 'magnum' springers, they tend to favor the heavier pellets 18-21 gr or so.
