It used to say too much spoils the flavour on the jar but they've changed the label

Doesn’t seem to be very appetizing.

I finally got my hands on a jar of the English one; Marmite, I think. It was expensive with the shipping. Spread it too thick at first, as everyone does. Horribly salty. About one molecule thick is perfect on a slice of buttered toast. Still salty, but the earthy, vaguely mushroomy, yeasty flavor is oddly pleasant. I'd buy more if salt wasn't so hard on my blood pressure.

I tried a dab on my finger. It took gargling with diesel to make that chit go away. My dumb azz thought it would have to taste better than it smelled .....which is NOT the case.

Perhaps its better on a cricket.

Yes, this seems to be the mistake most foreigners make. It is quite an intense taste, so you don't need much. Do it properly, a thin scrape on a buttered round of toast for example, and it is a really good umami flavour. It tastes slightly of beer, which shouldn't be a big surprise, given its origin. Slaister it on though and it is too strong.

It also is good added to a stew or stirfry - again you don't need much.

For most Aussies it is a very evocative taste, one of the things you miss when you are away from the place. We even have it in our Army ration packs.

There's a reduced salt version of Vegemite, but there again you use so little of it I don't know that it makes much difference really. There's also Promite, which is similar, but not the same - it is based on vegetable stock rather than beer yeast. It is a bit less salty too.

Marmite you can keep. Popular among poms though I believe.

Used to buy Marmite once in a while to fortify gravy and such. Even the small one always went off code long before I got near the bottom. Now I buy Better Than Bullion, chicken and beef flavors, and it gets used up. Oyster sauce and fish sauce too.

No Vegemite but had Marmite on toast in England after a great deal of cajoling.
Not a fan.

Dan, I think I've seen Vegemite in my local military commissary at times. They have a large international section featuring foods from around the world - for folks who have been stationed overseas and miss the foods they had there. You've about got me ready to try some, just to see how it differs from the Marmite I had. I suspect it is more of a Coke/Pepsi thing where the differences are slight but the followers of each are ardent.

If I voice a preference, the response here on the 'Fire will probably be less animated than the Duke's/Hellman's/Miracle Whip mayo mayhem!

Like it better on toast !

Still get family to bring half a dozen jars, when they visit.

That's a really heavy amount! You are indeed addicted. First-timers would be well advised to look at new-2's photo and use about a quarter of that amount - or even less. Look at the bottom slice and find that blob up in the top left. That's enough for the whole slice as a trial.

Spread lightly on bread with cheese, tomato, lettuce, and ham I really liked it. I've never had it on just bread.

Yes, am definitely a seasoned veteran !!

That's about half, what my brother uses too.

As stated above, it is also good as a flavour enhancer, added to stews & such.

Add to hot water & drink like tea/broth, for a head cold.
