Worst one I can recall in these parts was a man operating a skid-steer near one pit; moving something, when the machine got too close and it slid in. The pit was full. He couldn't get out. Suffocated on liquid manure..
That one still gives me the heebie jeebies...

It's a bum thing for sure. My prayers go out to the family.
I can't help but remember a poem my mother taught me:
There once was a farmer named Clyde Who fell into the cesspit and died Now it seems that his brother, Fell into another And now they're interred side by side.

Tragic can only imagine the first one or two in became incapacitated and being brothers, last man risked his life to save them.

People underestimate how dangerous a deep pit or trench can be. They don't think about fumes or lack of oxygen. That's why when you see workers in a situation like that there are blowers with air tubes going into the pit with them. This is sad.

My sympathy to the family. I'm sure if a brother was in trouble, most of us would push past the limits trying to save him.

I understand those 3 were the entirety of the offspring in that family. I hope those guys were married with children and that the widows and grandchildren are taken care of.

There used to be a rendering plant in the south end of Columbus. They had a carcass pit where they threw the hides of dead cows and other livestock. A couple of workers were down in the pit for some reason and got overcome by methane gas. Two Columbus Firefighters were also overcome trying to rescue them. I can't remember exactly as it was the late 70's to early 80's, but I'm pretty sure all of them died. It was pretty sad.
