The only positive attribute of copperheads is that they are docile. Don’t fugg with them, they won’t fugg with you. Not much solace if you step on one bare footed on the way to pick up your relief check in the mailbox at the end of your driveway (think Slumlord).

Nice head shot earlybrd! This little lady took a swipe at me Tuesday with zero warning. No rattle, nothing. She had a complete pack rat inside her, apparently had swallowed it not too long before our encounter - the enzymes hadn't even started to break down any of the hair. You can see the outline of the last supper in the bulge on the left side. She ain't gonna try that aqain. Same with this guy on my uncles place. He had to have just eaten the rabbit.

We have em here, some place seem to have a good many, mostly not.
If I needed a venomous snake, I'd go get a Timber Rattler. They aren't hard to find if you have any idea where to look.
A friend, Joe, lived at his families junkyard across 30 from a big wet area adjacent to the river. Copperhead galore.
One Saturday Joe was adjusting the clutch on his Tri-axle, something caught his eye. It was a big dam copperhead coming under the truck to join him.
Ended up in fairly bad shape. Concussion, hell of a gash on his head. Not sure if he went clear out, but things were fuzzy for awhile. No idea what happened to the snake, but the fuel tank strap bolt wasn't hurt. The hair and hide came right of of it.
The wounds healed.
No venom was exchanged.
Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!

Looks like he's sniffing your revolver. Hope you saw it before you went to pick it up off the ground.

The rattlesnakes are much more dangerous. We have both here, but more copperheads. I had a neighbor and a cousin recently bit. Both at night in their yards and both were wearing flip flops. One required anti venom (several doses) and the other did not (dry bite). They come out to eat cicadas at the base of the oak trees. Dog gets a rattlesnake shot every year.

Ok, here is a stupid question from a Northern boy. Are they more deadly than a rattlesnake? Any previous warning they are around? You say they get into trees?
Give me reason to not move South in retirement. Thanks. NBo they aren't more deadly than a rattler. No, they don't issue a warning. Yes they are docile. Yes they rely on their camouflage which is excellent as their main protection. And when you don't see the camouflage and step on one, they'll bite you.

I think it depends on what type of rattler you have around. Here is western KS, pretty much all we have are the prairie rattlers and most of them just want to be left alone. Bull snakes are more aggressive than the prairie rattlers. Most of the rattlesnake bites around here are either someone stepping on them or a drunk redneck playing with them.

Had a 57” long Canebrake rattler in the yard this past Thursday evening. My Brittany Spaniel found it and sounded her alarm. By the time I got there the buzz tail was all coiled and ready to rock. He didn’t enjoy the 44 shot shell i delivered…….
Thankfully he didn’t get my dog.

Those of you who are killing copperheads, I would love to have their skins to incorporate into some of my leather work. Skin 'em out and put them in a mix of 50/50 solution of alcohol and glycerin. A ziploc sandwich bag will hold even the biggest skin. I will pay for shipping and your glycerin.

A ziploc sandwich bag will hold even the biggest skin. I will pay for shipping and your glycerin. I knew a couple of guys in southern California who'd just use anti-freeze to cure rattlesnake skins. Put the skin in a 3 lb. coffee can, fill it with anti-freeze and it did not take long to cure the skin. L.W.
