We run across S traps under water fountains quite often or extra deep jury rigged traps cause they have waste line too high.

Hoping someone can help me with this plumbing issue. Plumbing in a new vanity in the bathroom. The vanity has a built in shelf that I would like to utilize for space. If I plumb it as a straight shot out of the p trap to the wall the trap/pipe is directly in the center of the shelf and about 1/2” above the shelf taking up a lot of the space. Can I plumb it using a 45 out of the wall to gain some height/clearance from the shelf. I’ve included a “bad” sketch of what I hope to use. Using 1 1/2” abs for all pipes also. Any insight greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If it is a new vanity, first take the vanity out, then cut a section of the wall out. Fix the plumbing the correct way (proper height), reinstall piece of drywall and vanity. New T for in the wall and a coupling and possibly a slip coupling. You could even use a rubber fernco instead of a glued slip coupling. If it is a tile wall, that makes it more difficult, but not likely that tile would be behind a vanity.

Indoor plumbing is way over-rated.

Trying to gain space on the shelf by allowing storage under the trap and against the pipes is a bad idea. Especially the plastic jointed piping most use in such applications is prone tp leaking if disturbed. And it will be disturbed with women or kids jamming stuff in there with no understanding or care for the fragility of the drain system.

Keep life simple, get rid of the shelf......
Or, I doubt your first drawing has the ability to drain the trap by suction,
You wanna go full blown Alabama on it, go for it. Thank you. Sometimes it’s easy to over complicate things. I can make it work with the shelf but I’d like it to be useable space as the bathroom is pretty small and storage space would be nice. can you drop your horizontal drain line below the shelf? or raise the vanity a touch? plumbed cabinets are always marginal use space...

It is a bad idea to place any things in this area. The pipe system itself is not so strong. And if your wife or girlfriend does not take this into account, the result may damage the trap. It is better to place the cabinet in another place. This way, you will be sure that no one will damage the drainage system, and there will be enough space in the cabinet itself. Recently, I also changed the pipes in the bathroom and faced the problem of their placement. I also racked my head for a long time, but in the end, I consulted with the employees from plumbersingapore.org, and I ordered a job from them. As a result, we fixed them on top, which I am pleased with. In the locksmith business, a good specialist is important.

Yep. Shelves don't belong in a sink base.

You could try a studor vent if it siphons.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.
