Pretty impressive Bobski. I was under the impression that the barrels were interchangeable between them but my two are different enough that they will not swap. The gray one is an early gun from before they were the Twelvette. Is this common or is it a really early model or something?

there were 3 different ribs and 5 different designed bbls. up till 1960, bbls easily swapped out. bbls marked st Louis, mo are the coveted ones. they tend to swap in everything. a design change in 1960 thru a wrench into the swapping. its the same time the short grip was done away with. the issue with the bbls is the width of the rails and the grooves in the bbl block locking lug.it takes a few talented swipes on the bbl rails to make newer bbls fit into everything. your best source for info on varieties of d.autos is the coveted 1955/56/57 browning catalogs. get one. well worth the investment. steel guns were first. then the gray guns. they were known as the lightweight. (no markings) name change in late 59-60 and they became 12vettes. dragon black was first, then forest green, autumn brown, and 20 others never sold to general public. its easy to get hooked and confused with this gun. they had marked, unmarked receivers saying lightweight and no markings in the same gun category. short grip long grip, bow forearms, squared forearms, browning buttplates john looking sideways or full profile. better known as 1 eye or 2 eyed buttplates. you can see how easy it is to get hooked into collecting them.

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

I’ve had a dragon black 1961 for over a year and love it. My only issue with the gun is its full choke. I would be better served with an improved or modified choke.
