284 Win works with limited bullets but mag length limits long bullets, 6.5 bullets that work well are long!! Built a 284 on a Rem 700 SA and would not do it again.

I have a 99CD in 6.5-284, also a 6-284, 25-284, and 338-284, all have COAL issues because of the limits imposed by the magazine. I also have a 99F in 260 that works much better, no COAL issues with most component bullets 140 grains or less.

Be the first to build a 99 in 6.5 Creedmor!!

but I don't think that offers any advantage over the 260Rem

260 Rem is a much better choice for the 99 platform.

Ok i figured the the COAL would be the issue with the longer bullets. I have the 99f and 99E in the 260 Rem., I also have the 6.5 CM in the 99E platform but as of yet have not shot the longer bullets, I have a 99C in process in the 6.5CM but it has the usual COVID and sleepy Joe crisis driven delays on the barrel. I landed a 284 in 99C last night just considering build or sell.

The 260 rem. would of been the perfect cartridge for the 99, it handles whitetails and such like a dream. yet to kill anything with the 6.5 CM, this fall probably exercise it a bit.

I know a guy who killed a buffalo (bison) with a 6.5C. he shot it three times in the head.

JES converted my 99C from 308 to 338 Federal some 10-11 years ago. Never looked back.

I have built both 6.5 CM and 260 Rem for the 99 with no problems. It is easier to get the 260 to feed smoothly, but they both work well and shoot well. Early trials showed a slight accuracy advantage for the 6.5, but the 260 has consistently out performed it at 200 yds and beyond. I have thought about the 6.5 284 but wonder if the 4 round magazine limitation is worth the few fps in velocity increase.

Of my non standard caliber conversions the 260 Rem. so far has been the best for easy fit
of and accuracy.
