Jewel 8 year old molly mule, Pepper the dog with a flag, and if you look close you can see a rooster and a shotgun on her back.

That mule was born 40 feet from my house when it was 100 degrees in the shade. She has been really good for me

The dog is gone now, but we had some good times following him as far as he wanted to go. When he pionted, I would dismount and load my double, and walk up for a shot.

We never got too many but everybody got exercised. Made that hunting in 4 foot tall grass easy and I could find my dog.

How do you have that shotgun slung?

If you take the time it takes, it takes less time.

I had a local saddlemaker and mule buddy stich me up a tube of saddle leather that the barrels and forend just slip into about a foot long Then added a strap to go over the saddle horn.

Shotgun hangs in front of the saddle horn with barrels down kinda cross ways. It would be a poor setup around trees or obstacles.

I bought a Baikal 12 ga double to carry, cause it didn't cost so much if it got wrecked. I liked carrying the double as it was easy to load/unload, it was cheap, and it fit me.

Shotgun was held secure enough for me and didin't flop too bad. I got off to load and shoot. I think too much of my mule to shoot over them big ears.I has a mcarty rein or get down rope that I just left draped over my arm when I walked up on the point , probably drop it to shoot, never had to walk home.

Yea,she would chew lead ropes and wander off. A long time ago, I decided that putting hobbles on mules when tied, relieved me and the mule of a lot of aggravation. Unless you work them until they are really tired, most will all paw .

That Montana picture; we’re her front Legs swollen a bit? Looks a little stocked up to me. I have a 7-8 year old gelding mule and yes they love to paw. Expressing frustration I think. He will take his hobbles off in about 5 minutes unless you have them on way too tight. Then it takes him a 1/2 hour…. Gave up. Tie him high and not too tight so he can step around a bit and he soon settles in most situations.
He is a rough country Cadillac and I have him walk trot loping good enough to get a ribbon in the local horse shows. Changing leads stopping and turning around too. Covid wrecked the show season but hoping for next year to win a Reining or two.

Nice pictures, they have me missing days past. Over the years we have had 6 mules, only one was a molly but she was a great companion living 38 years. Now in retirement we travel too much to properly care for any large animals, but ride anytime I can rent or borrow a mule.

I've had a number of mules over the years. My last one now- I've had her since 1989. She's 39 this year and is still rideable by smaller folks.
