Took a walk though some of my favorite deer hunting area after hearing that EHD was killing lots of deer about 20 miles away. Found dead whitetails and could smell many more that I didn't bother looking for in the thick brush.
Disappointing to say the least. Its going to take awhile for the population to rebuild, but these hot dry summers seem to bring it on the and this has been one of the hottest and driest summers on record.
I'm already thinking I may not punch a buck tag this year which would be the first time in 42 years of hunting. Just doesn't seem right to try killing one in an area getting hammered. This is the first time I've found deer dying from EHD in my hunting area. It has hit parts of the region around me in years past.
Anybody else in the West seeing EHD? From what I'm hearing, this a particular fast killing strain that is hitting my area.

One thing, Whitetail deer rebound quick if they have good fawn crops of twins and triplets. I seen it in eastern Coloradoa few years ago
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles

We had it hit in our area years back an just about every dry creek bed or watering hole had a dead deer. The next year was slow but the deer did rebound pretty quickly.

Got hit with it pretty hard back around 07-08. Took two-three years but they did come back. Some areas suffered greater losses than others, and it took longer for the deer to rebound in those areas hardest hit, obviously.

EHD, coyotes, and bob cats....Insurance companies love this trio.
Fish and Game put out a camera by a coyote den a few years ago and a single pair of coyotes brought in 22 fawns to the den for the pups to eat....Here in SC, we have 1/4 of the deer we had in the year 2000,

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.
Ain’t easy havin pals.

In 2012, in northern NE it hit hard, losing 60-80% of whitetail. Numbers are climbing but still down a decade later.

Hate to hear that George. Even if they do rebound fairly quickly it's going to be awhile years before you have bucks with a little age on them.
