The forend on my 1957 .308 Savage 99 has been butchered a bit. I believe the sling eyelet nearer the muzzle is more period correct. Can anyone offer an opinion on what swivel model would be correct for this eyelet? I have an Uncle Mike's swivel but it will only fit the smaller eyelet near the forend screw. The gun is not a showpiece but I would like to make it better than it is now. It has already been to the gunsmith for cleaning and adjust the counter. All comments/thoughts/criticisms are welcome.

I have found the same eyelet on some of my takedown model 99'S, they have replaced the forward screw on the takedown button?

Neither of those is standard for a late 50’s 99. The flat headed stud was standard on the 1930’s 99RS, and could be bought separate in the late 40’s and 50’s.

The 99R in the 50’s had sling eyes.

What is on the buttstock? Are there two different studs there too?

Just one in the butt stock. The larger size.

Is there a particular swivel to go with the flat headed stud? That might be my best option. If I try to replace the flat headed stud with a sling eye I may create more issues than I have now. Thanks for the book suggestion. I bought one earlier this year and enjoy it very much! Mark

The correct swivels for the flat headed studs are even rarer than the studs, and expensive. Somebody may know of a source for swivels that will work.
