Gentlemen:

Has anyone ever tried this? I assume that the rotary mag would allow pointed bullet use IF the overall length of the cartridge was OK.

If you have tried it, what did you learn?

Pointed bullets work fine in the Savage 99 30-30. I don't often load them anymore as I also have Winchester 94's. I do load them for my 303 sav.
just follow the reloading manuals for the bullet weight.

It all depends on the contruction of the bullet being used. Many of the .30 cal spire points are designed for mushrooming and penetration levels at a higher FPS than the thuty thuty will toss them. So loading them will actually DECREASE the guns performance

And the "flatter shooting" hope that some FEEL they'll gain by going to spire points just doesn't exist when tests have been done by several respected rags.

Stick w/ the 150 and 170 FN loadings they're both fine white tail rounds out to 150yds or so.

Excellent point RAM.

I was thinking of loading a 150 gr partition for "all around" use (Deer, Pigs, Bear). To the best of my knoweldge, Nosler does not make a flat point 150 gr Partition (I could be wrong -- my wife usually is around when it happens, though). I figgered the Partition would do well at 30/30 ranges and provide the necessary penetration for shoulder shots on game that is tougher than deer.

BMT, you're right.

Nosler doesn't make a flat or round nosed 150 gr. Partition Bullet, but according to their latest bullet chart, they DO make a 170 gr. round-nosed .308 caliber Partition Bullet that should work just fine for your needs.

Good Hunting!

Hmmmm . . .

www.nosler.com/chartpartition.html

Lists the 150 gr partitions. Could be a good choice. One never really knows . ..
