I'm moving to the big city and I was looking to see if any campfire members are local or familiar with the area. If anyone could point me to a shooting range or good gun shops please do. I'm signing the lease on a new apartment tomorrow and should start the new job sometime next week.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions!

Corvette's are made in Bowling Green...they also have a nice Corvette museum there. They have good gun shows in Lexington each year and also just down the road in Louisville.

ROTR,

Nope not in Lexington, try a little farther southwest, down near mammoth cave, city called Bowling Green. Close but...no cigar.

Biathalonman,

Plenty to do around Lex. you won't have any trouble finding hunting and shooting except they won't let you hunt around those horsey farms that run so fast, don't even ask. head north east for some good deer hunting around Cinn, and east along the ohio river. head east south east toward Hazard for Elk. West toward Ohio Co. for some good deer hunting also. If you like fishing head south for some of the best Smallmouth, Stripe bass fishing in lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow lake. You will like it around Lex other than those UK girls that are always in the way (traffic). Everything runs in a circle down there so you won't get lost....

OOhhhpppps ! I just seen you are from KY. so you already know this stuff.........

Biathalon and 7400,

I'm from KY too. Grew up in Lake Cumberland and lived in Louisville a couple years before the military.

Will be headed to Ft Campbell in Aug after being overseas 6 years. Can't wait to get back. My parents/grandparent, et al, are still in Lake Cumberland.

PRP,

I always stayed at Jamestown while fishing Cumberland, a couple of times we stayed in Russell Springs. We always had a great time on the lake and some of the best fishing around winter or summer it didn't matter.

My brother and I saw this place featured on one of the outdoor channels on his sattelite.

We'd love to try the sporting clays there. Looked like a pretty neat place if you can aford it!

7400,

I went to grade school in Jamestown and High School in Russell Springs - grew up on a farm between the two. My Dad lived in Greenup as a child - just a few years because of my Grandfather's work on pipelines, but no family ties there. Most of the family is in Lake Cumberland with the a few out in Somerset and Fauhbush.

Haven't been around there much lately due to work, but the marinas at the State Dock and on the Jamestown side have grown 10 fold since I was a kid. Used to work as a life guard at the State Park.

Not much in the way of good gun shops in Lexington. Couple of small ones as I remember. Everybody should have a Sportsman's Warehouse within 100 miles of home. Not much good public land in KY anymore. The best hunting is on farms north of Fayette county. If you can get to know some tobacco farmers around Cynthiana, it could be worth your while. I used to put in for a quota hunt in Penyrile forest near Dawson Springs. Big bucks, but hard to get drawn for. Best bet is to concentrate on farms halfway to Cincinnati, around the Williamstown exit (Grant County) off I-75. Owen county is less crowded, but people don't like outsiders there, and hate hunters from Cincinnati. Join the gun club in Nicolasville (I think). You may make some useful friends.

Biathlonman Welcome, I like Antique & Modern Firearms, but they can get pricey. Bud's gun shop on new circle road is ok, but my favorite is Mike's guns in Frankfort. As indicated the big gun shows in lexington and Louisville are GREAT but very crowded. 2 shows yearly each, one jan, one Feb, one Jul, one aug or so.
Get on the waiting list for membership in Bluegrass sportsman club in Wilmore. Takes maybe 6 months but definitely worth it. Anderson County, (Lawerenceburg) also has a nice sportsman club.
As said in previous posts hunting is crowded but leasing is becoming popular. I own land north of frankfort so I lucked out. I keep it for family and close friends.
Horse farms are EXTREMELY hard to get permission but a few let me groundhog hunt. Surrounding area has new subdivisions which are bedroom communities for folks moving out of the city, most don't appreciate guns going off around their subdivision. BTW wanna see BIG deer, go out "Old Frankfort pike" then turn on AIKEN PIKE (about 12 miles out). WOW!!!! I am fortunate to live very close. Not uncommon to see 50-100 deer on a late summer evening. NO HUNTING! Guy about 1/2 mile from me took a B&C year before last (He has 20 acres amonst the farms). Not uncommon to see a B&C each year, but these farms are heavily patrolled. I found a shed on farm were I G'hog hunt, shed alone scored about 75.
Again welcome, BTW- with whom is the new job? (If I may ask?)

Finding a shooting range is the biggest obstacle, but my girlfriends family are outdoors people so hopefully they will be able to pont me in the right direction.

I will be working for a small company called College Finance and Planning Inc., and we help high school students get into college. From helping with ACT and SAT test scores, filling out applications, helping with financial aid forms, taking students on campus visits, you name it we do it! It's located close to the Fayette mall.

I will be moving into the new apartment next week, Chinoe Apartments, so I really like the neighborhood and can't wait to get settled in. My room mate will me a 1st year med. Student at UK. I'll probably go back and get my masters in the next year or so, but for now I really need to start paying off the first 5 years!

Biathlonman,

I echo one poster that said to check hunting in the Williamstown exit, off I-75. My dad owns a farm in Dry Ridge, and the folks there (renters) tell me they have good hunting there. One said a couple years ago he got a 10 pointer in them hills. The area around Dry Ridge/Williamstown is extremely hilly when you drive out the country roads. I thik generally folks will allow you to hunt their farms of you are courteous to them. Hang around the feed stores (Southern States) in Dry Ridge and you may strike up a conversation with the local farmers and the rest will lead to something.

Its been a while since I hunt in em' hills, but people around there are mighty friendly, and I would not think some of them want them groundhogs to be removed from their fields that they use to raise tobacco. Sadly, the state is phasing out tobacco, so many are not raising tobacco anymore.

Regards
