Biden was on tranquilizers at that point to stop him from spilling the beans and resigning at which point they would have to kill him immediately to silence him. He could easily say that he was senile 5 years ago and that he was forced to run. He could also name who is really calling the shots which would require a shot come his way first. Nothing new here, as it's all happened before
