The last 870 I bought, probably 6 - 8 years ago, had a laminate stock and was a beautiful gun, looked great. The only issue I found with it was that POA and POI differed enough that I couldn't hit schitt with it! Remington was perfectly fine with doing nothing about it. (I Used To Be a real fan of remingtons...).
I've owned a couple of Remington 870 Expresses and a couple 870 Wingmasters. I sent the Expresses down the road a long time ago and have zero plans to ever buy another. The Wingmasters on the other hand are not for sale and I will likely have them until I die.
Many (most??) times I grab that one instead of the 12g Wingmaster. Kicks less, with my short arms it fits better too. And I've killed pheasant with it too. Was thinking on trading it off after winning it, but let my older bro know. He told me to shoot it a couple of times first. He's built similar to me and told me he swapped the buttstock on his 870 home defense gun to the youth model stock for a better fit.

Put a Limbsaver recoil pad on it, why let the std one beat on you?
Already has one. The slip on kind. And with my short arms it just makes length of pull even longer. Works OK for turkey, as I'm not shooting a bunch then.
But for upland birds, I'll take the 20g most times.

Inflation isn't happening, These $399 870 Expresses were $199 in 1997 when I bought my 12 guage.
Back when I was working in the Wholesale Firearms Industry, we closed out some 870 Express 16 ga Remchoke version’s for $199.
