Chasing Classic Cars recently repeated a segment about a Volvo P-1800 which achieved over three million miles. Got me to wondering what mass produced auto engine currently produced or in the recent past would be capable of equaling or beating this record? Please consider engine only, not drive train, body integrity, or electronics. Any opinion's out there?

I know that some of the old Mercedes diesel cars have exceeded the 2 million mile mark, and then of course there are some Cummins diesels that have exceeded 3 million. But that Volvo, with it's gas burner, is pretty unique.

Nissan KA24DE (2.4 4-cylinder)
2000 Frontier, 345,000 miles so far, I'm keeping it since it still gets 27 mpg and doesn't burn/leak oil at all

Something else interesting: Chrysler made 1.05 million PT Cruisers between 2005 and 2010, but when is the last time you saw one on the road? An 11 year old car isn't really that old.
Now with even more aplomb

3 million miles, that's a lot!
A few years ago, Ford traded a fellow a new Ranger for one that had a million miles on it. Single owner and he drove something like 500 highway miles per day. Had the oil changed every weekend.

That old Chrysler 225 slant six (1960s) was known for running forever. But I have no stats to print.

Please consider engine only, not drive train, body integrity, or electronics. Any opinion's out there? That P-1800 had a Volvo truck engine in it and it was rebuilt a time or two. Volvos have always been very well built. One of my favorite cars was a '65 Volvo (looked like a small '48 Ford sedan). I wanted a dependable car that got good gas mileage so I bought the Volvo. It was recommended by a good friend who was a mechanic at the local Volvo dealership. He told me if I blew up the engine Volvo would replace it no matter how many miles it had on it.

Thanks for the opinions. I have a Jeep XJ with 265000 on the clock which is still my favorite daily driver. I'd love to see how long it would hold up, those 4.0 liter sixes seem to last a while, but at my age it will probably outlast me and then some.

Local guy had a Nash dealership til they went under, started selling used volvos. Had lots of them and a really good mechanic. Had a P-1800 in the showroom with a million miles on it. Still had his Nash wrecker. I bought a 1981 240 wagon off him in 1990. Had 160,000 on it and I sold it 4 years later with 324,000. They are tanks.

The Toyota F series straight 6 has got to be near the top of the mileage king list. It is about the most bullet proof straight 6 out there.

I’d go with a Toyota 22R 4 cylinder or a Ford 300 6 cylinder. Both seem to run forever.

I’ve still got Dad’s old Ranch Truck. 92 Chevy 2500 3/4 ton with the Factory 350 and 5 Speed Manual transmission with the granny low gear. 350,000 + miles and still runs great.
Only Chevy I ever owned that’s worth a damn. 🤠

A little different than you asked, but we just replaced a gen set on an offshore supply vessel where the engine had over 150,000 hrs. It basically ran 24/7/365, other than being taken offline for routine maintenance. That’s running for over 17 years.
Assuming it was a car/truck engine running at 40 miles/hr, that would be over 6 million miles.

I bought it right at one year old from a Nissan dealer when I couldn't make a deal on a 2001, they flipped the used one at me for a great price to keep me from walking without a sale. It was like new, no wear/tear on the vehicle except for the odometer reading, no door dings, spotless interior with no discernable wear on the seats or carpet, just clean. Windows were already tinted, the first owner put in a spray-in bed liner, I only added a low-profile tool box behind the cab.
