Hello! I have a centerfire cadet action and I want to barrel it in something like a JDJ caliber based on the 225 case, but have heard that varying reports that the 225 is too much for the little cadet.

Will the cadet action take the 225 Winchester caliber, and if so, assuming the cartridge is kept short enough, will one of the JD calibers based on this parent case work?

The cadet is a pretty light frame for the .225.
218AI works super, ans does the 17 javelina, etc.
go with a lighter 22 cal and you'll be fine.

My brother made his into a .218 Mashburn Bee. He put a half-octagon stainless barrel on it with a receiver sight - a pretty little short-range varninter!

Another problem you may encounter is a chambering problem with the longer cartridges. The entry angle into these small actions is pretty steep and some of the 30-30 based cartridges will not enter the chamber. The JDJ cartridges being an improved to the extreme design may make the problem worse. I believe that is why most of the Cadet actions you see with custom barrels are chambered in the 22 Hornet or 218 Bee or variations of them. I have seen a couple chambered for the 30 Herrett, and of course various pistol cartridges but nothing on a much longer case.

If it were mine, I'd think hard about a 222R or maybe a regular 222 with the Snapp rimless extractor. On the other hand, a 218 Bee or Bee wildcat would be fine too.

I'd go with a Hornet, or at most a .222. I suppose a .223, but there's the problem someone mentioned about case length.

Other options are 25-20 and the Bee. The 25-20, loaded with spitzer bullets, can move on down range in a good action.

If I remember correctly, I handled a custom Martini in
22 Hipower a couple of years ago.

I've got one in 6.5/.303IMP, but it is on a larger frame action.
I don't think thee highpower will fit into a small frame cadet action, but I may be wrong.

Between my old hunting mate and myself, we have martini`s in 219 zipper.17 ackley bee,357 magnum.Had two in 222 rimmed (australian version of 222rem) with shot out barrells.
Maybe you can try 222rc made on the 357 maxi case, that take care of your brass supply. My gunsmith has made me a matini cadet in 30.30 for cast projectiles and not to be sold before rebarrelling!Wood for the cadets can be obtained from a stock maker here in Aus.

A 22 Highpower wouldn't be a bad round, but it's very hard to find the proper size bullets for it. I think they're something like .228 in diameter.

Hi Ranger,as you are in the states,I would try the 224rc on the 357 maxi case ie a rimmed 222.or a nice size round for the little martini is a 218 mashburn bee for near 222 rem velocity.Powder efficent and accurate.225 size cases can be a bit of a strain on the action and I would not like to to blow up that close to my face! BUT the choice is yours and gool luck and have fun.

Not me building one, Sav300. But I agree.

I've got some .22 Martinis, but it's pretty hard to get hold of a Cadet. I think all of them were made for Australia.

I've got two 22 Hornets already, and two 25-20s (which wouldn't be a bad round for a Cadet.) I'm very well pleased with my .22s.

BTW, noticiing your handle, I just traded (I think) for a Mod 99 300 Savage made in 1941. It's missing a front sight blade but otherwise is in good shape.
