Not to sure about the "best" but my favorites are >300 sav. and the 6.5x257 I just got this summer. I suspect either will do just fine for any deer or deer hunting situation I will ever be in. Wow, now that's a big cartridge.

Hoot, You mentioned "perfect caliber" not cartridge; in each caliber there is a small slew of cartridges that work. In some calibers, there are some cartridges that are ideal (almost), others that are so-so, and others I wouldn't use at all. Always the contrarion  . Gdv

The perfect deer cartridge starts and ends with the 270 win. It is a good of a compromise as any choice out there. some mags are better for certain applications and the 25-06 is just plain cool. the 264s are fine if you want to take on an European air but the 270 is hard to beat.
I have loaded for and shot cartridges in 32 different chamberings (no big deal to most of you on this site) but this experimentation brought me back full circle to the 270 win, the same place I started years ago.
The 270 win with 130 gr bullets just kills them dead.
If big money was on the line for an expensive out of state hunt, I might consider at fast 30 but day in and out, the 270 win is a GREAT choice.
Kinda like a big diesel truck, not sporty or exotic but they sure do work for their intended purposes.

Have used a .270 Win for almost 40 years; however, I've fallen in love with the .260 Rem in a Mtn rifle. Less noise and recoil, lighter to carry, and very,very effective!

Yeah, i have the same rifle in a 7mm-08 and it really is pretty dang perfect. My only beef with it is that it can be a little light up front- a little bouncy in the hand.

I would have to say any of the 308 based family of cartidges. Put a 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, or 35 caliber bullet at the top and you have a great deer killer. No need to waste powder on a LA round for those sized critters.
7mm-08 is my personal favorite.

I would have to say 7mm-08. And it seems to me it has got more nods so far than the 30-06, 270, 308, etc. Not that it really matters what we think

The 30-06 is the all-around work horse but it just depends on what type of hunting you're doing. A 30-30 or a rifle barreled 12 guage would be a perfect brush gun, but yeah, a 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm RUM, 300 Win Mag, 270, any of these callibers in the WSM version, take your pick! Or you can go with a 350 Rem Mag, maybe even a 338 Federal! Hey, why not a flint lock pistol! I'm still keeping an eye out for the Atomic rifle or A-gun.

Hunting deer covers a lot of different conditions. For some you might be better served with red dot or ghost ring aperature sight. In others a scope usually reserved for varmint duty might be just the thing. From 90 lb. weaklings to 300 + beheamiths.
I'll go along with the .277 being the closest to perfect caliber, in my favorite chambering of course. .270 Win.
Howsomever, I've got to agree with Steely on the .25s being close, and probably better for the younger crowd or those wishing for something easier on the ears and shoulder. 'course mine would be either the standard .250 Sav. or the Bob!

Life is too short to have a perfect caliber for deer. Whatever rifle or revolver I get out of the safe in the morning is what's perfect that day, from .223 to .45-70 rifle and .41 to .500 mag revolver. I agree with you totally.... I got a bunch of rifles that can do the job. I bought all of the different calibers just because I wanted to enjoy shooting them. Whatever I decide for that particular day will surely get the nod. Just my style,,,I like to relax, no pressure, enjoy, and just go with the flow.... Aloha!

I've had two... a Model 7 and a Mountain rifle. I liked them both. The M7 became a .358 and I still have the MR. If I could only have one 7mm-08, it'd be a Model 7 though. That's a SWEET combo. Either that or, I suppose, something with a fairly heavy 24" tube. It'd be a fun "accurate" rifle too.

What is best for whitetails is totally different from what's best for mule deer.
For typical whitetail hunting (shots less that 150 yds) a 45-70 is instant death.......deer drop like being pole axed.
If you like light calibers, 6mm Rem, 25-o6's & 250 Savage are tops.
Intermediate stuff like 358 & 348 Win's work well too.
Can't leave out the 30-30 & 32 Win as well.
In fact the world is full of good whitetail cartridges.....just pick one.
Whitetails don't take a lot of killing except in the hunters mind.
